I just had an Idea about Axim/Wm6
Why couldn't Dell just throw up their drivers in the WM6 SDK from MS's website and release it as beta.

At least we could get it up and running somewhat. And at aximsite we usually fix the problems ourselves anyway.

I've seen companies release unsupported updates that are "Use at your own risk" type deals.

As big as Dell is, I just can't see them walking off the playing field without a final upgrade. Dell has always been good with supporting future upgrades, which is why I chose them over other brands. The thing is, when your closing down a section of your company, you want to do it right before you leave or else it will haunt your company for time to come.

For instance Toshiba. I bought my e740 for $750. And 6 months later it was left to die. Well I'll never buy from Toshiba now. Same goes for Dell. You gotta finish the job right or else you'll never get the chance to fix it later. Dell makes great products and I've supported them even though sometimes they didn't support me. Dell doesn't want a bad rep. I'm sure they'll do us all right before ending there handheld chapter.

Well considering how they screwed up the wm5 upgrade for the x50 and how they arent selling axims anymore, a wm6 update still is a low chance.

But i see what ur saying, it would be nice for dell to end the axim line on a good note as they say.

That also assumes they've been working on the WM6 upgrade for some time, and that they're willing to unleash it on the world. With Toshiba, at least they HAD been working on the 2003SE upgrade, which is why they felt no qualms about releasing it into the wild. If Dell hasn't been doing so, then there's nothing to put out - and they'll have to spend MORE money on a dead product than they'll want to, on top of the risk of getting blamed for destroying more electronics than they already have due to the 'exploding Dell batteries'.

Toshiba never released an e740 2003se update, not even a 2003 one!
I believe the e750 had a 2003 update.
The e800 was originally 2003 and got a 2003se update though.

Upgrade... since X51V is going away, upgrade to an iphone and get all the goodies without the MS hassles.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I actually stopped buying toshiba after the e740 fiasco myself.. before then I'd owned 6 toshiba laptops over the years...

At least in the case of the x51v, I can't quite feel as though dell screwed me like I did with toshiba and the e740.

It is diffferent, when the x50 update was released there was a kernal update (CE 4.2 to CE 5.0), while this is just a revision (CE 5.0 to CE 5.2).

ABF, I know its not as simple as "throwing drivers up" hence it being an "idea" of what would be nice.

I'd rather have a beta WM6 that half works then nothing at all. At least we could have something to hack around with and tweak. If they released a beta version I'm sure the fine people here at Aximsite could continue the work and make it somewhat stable.

Basically my idea is, if anything, just to give us a start in the right direction so we can try to continue it rather then just leaving us in the dust.

Anyway Dell is being investigated for fraud and what not for false advertising and horrible Customer Service. I think they were doing something funky with the exchanged devices like not reporting them to financing or something. Plus Axim's always claimed future OS support... so maybe they'll have to follow suit.

because dell is like a car dealership. hell... i think i got better customer service at car dealership - at least i could understand this guys English. and don't get me wrong im bilingual myself and if I can't understand someone... then that person really needs to work on their English.
im done with dell, just like im done with lenovo. i don't tolerate rude customer service and people who don't know what they are doing. im moving onto panasonic toughbook as my next purchase.

Why do you _want_ to switch to WM6? What features do you feel that you are missing? MS operating systems only get worse as time goes on, not better. Doubly true for older hardware. Try running vista on a machine designed for 98.

So why are they calling it wm6 then? Shouldnt it be wm5se.
Like with wm2003 (CE 4.0) and wm2003se (CE 4.2)

They should have and were going to, but they changed it to 6 at the last moment.
Probably to make it sound like a big upgrade and sell more new devices.

Pure 100% unadulterated marketing stupidity is the cause of this nonsense. It should have been WM5se, WM6 *should* have been based on CE6.0 which was released a month or two before WM6 was and caused a lot of confusion and swearing directed at M$... I swear, marketing people will be the first up against the wall when the revolution comes.

For more info:

Windows Mobile Developer Blog: "A 6 by any other name"

Even the developers of WM thought the name change was a bit dumb.
