Gizmodo: What's Wrong with Windows Mobile and How WM7 and WM8 Are Going To Fix It
Even though it's on the front page of digg, I didn't see it mentioned anywhere else on mobilitysite. It's a pretty well-written article on the persistent problems with the Windows Mobile UI and how WM7 will likely copy the simpler iPhone UI:

I'm thinking the next one will look a lot like the zune

There will be a menue along the top with options like PIM, Multimedia, Email, Web, etc. And you will press side to side to switch between them, or up and down to select individual programs or tasks. I just want to see the next IE. Opera has the features, but it's so damn slow I can barely use it! The iPhone can't have a processor faster than the one in my Ax, so why is my Ax slower to respond to a keypress?

Although I loved my Axims for a long time, always thinking the x51v was not everything it could be, once I tried an ipod touch I was blown away.

The ipod touch, simply put, RESPONDS to your actions. You tap an icon, the program opens, you tap a menu, it drops down and you get options. Open safari and in 1 second it's up and loading a webpage.

The ipod touch and the iphone make the Axim feel like an old pentium 200 processor compared to a brand new 3 ghz computer.

The battery on my ipod touch lasts for 5 hours with video playback, wifi, brightness set high - my axim was lucky to get 2 hours.

But ultimately, the reason I went with an ipod touch over deciding to keep using my axim, the speed of the ipod touch OS is simply useable. It's practical, and it just WORKS!

Next time you click IE or Opera and wait for the loading screen, and wait, and wait, you'll know why Windows Mobile is a failure.

The iPod touch is an amazing looking device. But right now it's just a multimedia player. I still get more done with my old x50v.

The only thing my ipod touch doesn't do that my axims did was a bluetooth connection to the internet through my cell phone when I was away from a wifi spot.

Really, if you jailbreak your ipod and download 3rd party apps, there's not much it can't do that the axim can. Unless, of course you're talking about business stuff. My Axims were only used for personal things so I didn't need pocket excel or power point.

On my ipod touch I have wifi with a great browser through safari, the iphone email client, weather, a text editing and note taking program, games, emulators, music, movies, podcasts, longer battery life, all wrapped up in a smaller, sleeker device that responds faster and performs better.

Don't get me wrong, I had an X50 mid for a long time and just recently got an x51v which I'm now trying to sell. However, for personal use, the ipod touch does everything I needed my axim to do but couldn't without a huge headache.
