pda / phone
HI guys i have a X50v

My mobile phone contract is due to expire and i am think of just integrating my phone and PDA into one device.

Does dell do a PDA that is also a phone? I contacted them and they told the usual that you can buy a gprs compact flash unit to turn my existing X50v to a phone but i don't like the sound of that. But they also said if a buy the X51 or X30 and specify that i want it to be a phone they can mod the pda so that it phone capabile without taking a port up (they attatch it to the bottom of the unit or somthing?)

anyone else heard of this. Does anyone have any recommendation of a pda/phone

The first thing you need to do is decide what cell provider you are going with. Verizon offers several PDA/phone combinations. I am using Bluetooth to connect my x51v to my Motorola e815 cell phone but I have not heard anything about Dell modding a PDA.

I think someone (quite probbably the Dell Guy) is using the word 'Modding' incorectly.

Assuming all the hardware is compatable, you can use a bluetooth connection between your axim and a phone. And thus surf the internet that way.

With some axims you can also dial the number on the axim, let the phone make the connection and then use a bluetooth headset to take the call. Not quite the same thing as a combined unit, but it's still pretty nifty.

Dell doesn't make a ppc phone device, so your other option would be to go for one of those.

(and you were right about not wanting the CF unit. It isn't what you want)

I was a bit unsure on what he was saying. but he did say they would add a gprs unit onto the any pda without it taking up any ports. the gprs unit would be non removable. How this is done or how good it would look / work is what made me question it. if anyone wants to i have his dell extention number.

So has anyone used a gprs card for their axim and gotten it to work?

I personally cannot wait for the evolution of pda and cell phone! I HATE carrying two devices.

works fine for data... but awful for voice. In practice you are still carrying around 2 devices. It's just that one is useless until it's plugged into your axim.

Roll on the X90

GlobalSat has this CF GPRS Modem http://www.globalsat.com.tw/english/...id=27&p_id=135

the key issue is how long can the x51v 1100mAh basttery last if the pda is couple as a mobile phone...and what is the feasibility?

best solution: tape a cheap bt phone to the back of your unit. It might look ugly but hey, it works.

That actually looks like a really cool device from a glance. The first concerns I have is the 200mhz processor, QVGA screen, and the fact that it only uses Mini-SD cards, which are more expensive I believe. But on the bright side it has WiFi and Bluetooth, and WM5 on it.

I really hope my next device will be integrated with a cell phone and offer a full featured device (meaning WiFi most importantly, VGA, and a good processor). The main deterrent (for me) from the Treo 650/700w was the lack of WiFi. I also like my x51v too much too, just wish it was more of a device that I had on me ALL the time, like a phone would be.
