Please help a noob out
Hello
Can somebody school me on how smartphones work? I'm thinking of getting one that has Windows Mobile 5.0 on it and was wondering if this OS is pretty much the same as the one on an axim? Is it skinnable, can you add programs, etc? I guess what I'm asking is if smartphone os works the same as a PDA with the only difference being you don't have a stylus to navigate around with. Thanks for any help.

They're similar OS's but the main difference, as you pointed out, is that the smartphone version doesn't use a touchscreen. Nor does it come with excel or word I believe. This article is a bit old but should clarify things a bit more than I can. Personally I prefer the pocket pc phone version b/c I like the touch screen. Both versions allow you to add software.

It has themes, if that's what you mean by skinnable. And yes, you can add programs, but you can only use programs designed specifically for smartphones, since the device doesn't have a touchscreen. A full Pocket PC like the Axim can run both PPC and Smartphone applications. Also, the interface is not the same as the Axim, it's designed for a small screen, and more akin to a normal cell phone.
