Convergence v. Pocket Pc
I have an X50V w/w2003se and I love it. My company may switch from Nextel to Sprint and buy me a pda phone. There are pros and cons to this and I'd love to hear some opinions from you. Here's what I see, I'd probably get the PPC 6700:

Pros of Converged PDA Phone
one device for everything
wm 5
always available internet
camera
keyboard
speakerphone
wifi

Cons of Converged PDA Phone
Lose beloved VGA screen
Lose 2 huge memory slots that I use for 4GB CF card and 1GB SD card
small screen with way worse resolution compared to x50v
less capable graphix
less powerful processor
mini SD card slot - ugh!

Basically I give up my beautiful screen and huge storage. I watch movies once in awhile but I guess I can live without it. Mini SD cards won't store nearly as much as what mine store.

Thanks for any opinion. Throw something out there, anything, and I will appreciate the feedback.

I'm going converged with the Cingular 8525 as soon as it comes out. I'm giving my wife my newly replaced x51v.

The microSD sizes suck, but I'm sure that that sizes will increase in the future (for my MP3 library of course)

I don't really play games or video on the axim

I think you already summarized things pretty well.

I am 'converged' most of the time for work-day purposes - i.e. carry just a Cingular 8125 most days to work / client sites. Overall, I like it. But I do still use my Axim pretty frequently at night though - and that is partly because I love the big beautiful screen!

One other small point to consider when going converged - it makes you a lot more concerned about taking your one critical device out with you on 'social' occasions. As in, you'll find yourself wanting to leave your device at home if you're going to a Friday Happy Hour, which you rarely tend to do with a 'normal' cell phone.

The less powerful processor / less availab le memory may leave with you some choices about which apps are really essential to you, and which ones you can get by without.

Mini-SD slot = could be worse - a number of new devices now seem to be coming out with Micro-SD.

Absolutely! The HTC Hermes is definetely the way to go, and going through Cingular should GREATLY reduce the price from 899.99 for the Imate Jas JAm, HTC Hermes, to about 399 and with a potential/eventual rebate of 100.00!

The Hermes is already released in Europe and is probably the MOST anticipated device that the US market has ever seen. It will easily put the square screen Motorola Q and the HP 6915 to shame!!!

The Hermes will have a 2 megapixel camera which will be great for those timely shots that are normally missed. It will have a very stout 400 mhz processor. It runs on a SD card, not a micro sd. It will have a qwerty keyboard and a 2.8 inch rectangular screen which is landscapable when you slide out the keyboard. Not to mention that it will support 3g edge and the high speed carrier service!

It will have wifi (skype) and BT. What more could you want!

This is an awesome machine which should be released at the end of this month or the beginning of November.

I think it will usher in the demise of the pocket pc. All that is left for them to to intergrate is video out and a vga screen. Should not be so hard for next year!

I love my 6700 but a 6800 probably will be out soon. I have heard that the 6700 will not be sold (once out of stock) after October.

I love the look of the Hermes / 8525 also. Just waiting on Cingular releasing it and will definitely look to grab that and maybe hand down the 8125 to the wife ...

Why don't these pda phones have vga screens, do they take up too much processor power?

I'd go with battery power... converged means phone primary

Is the Cingular 8125 and the Sprint PPC 6700 the same phone?

Steve,

One of my close friends works for Sprint. He recently got the converged 6700 that you are looking at and loves it. Of course, he is more of a cell phone guy than a pocket pc guy. So, where you or I might look at it and ssee an OK computer with a cell phone, he sees an amazing cell phone with lots of advanced options. Anyway, I have played with his phone a little. It is really slick. You are correct that the screen and memory are not as nice.

One other complaint is that when you use it as a phone, it can be a little tricky to dial sometimes. But, I think the idea of a converged device is awsome.

I'm thinking of keeping my x50v as a movie player and gps, and using the pda phone as my main device, if we do make the switch. There is no way a phone can do everything I want it to do. On the other hand, there is no way a pda can do everythin
