Simple tutorial for establishing wi-fi connection between ppc and winxp
I have done it in the past, but for the last 2 weeks i am trying again, but no luck this time.

I have:
- HTC P4350 with Windows Mobile 6.0
- Windows XP
- Siemens wired ADSL modem
- Linksys wireleess-g usb network adapter

Bout my problem... I know it HAS a solution, because i did it a few months ago.
Now i am stack with my head hitting the wall...

Anyway, here it is:
My pc connects to Internet through a wired ADSL modem (with the LAN port).
I have also bought a wireless adapter from Linksys, which i connect it through the USB port, to my pc.
From my wi-fi ppc, i want to view my shared files on win xp, with the help of the wireless adapter. I also want my ppc to recognize my internet connection from my pc (using Internet Connection Sharing), and access web pages.

I need a simple tutorial, just 1 simple page with the settings that i should make on the ppc and in Win XP.

Whenever i try to do some connection with my ppc and my pc, i lose my real dsl connnection from the modem. By that, i just mean that running Internet Explorer in my pc, does not load any web page. I have to restore my win xp system in order to load web pages.

Another thing i read somewhere. The IP of my ppc becomes 168.x.x.x and not 192.x.x.x I read that this means the connection with the wireless adapter is not correct.

I just want to see my pc files, from the HTC.
I am not asking for something big, just one page simple tutorial with the settings i should make.

Any simple tutorial would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks AGAIN.

MANY THANKS for your work, keep going, hope to hear from someone real soon,
a desperate user,
Ioannis

See if Ad-hoc (Peer-to-peer) mode with Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in the WiFi Guide is any help.

Note that a firewall on the PC could be causing problems. WinXP upgrades frequently can change the settings on its firewall and that's the first thing I think of when an ad-hoc connection was working then stops.

You have helped me before mate.

I read what you say. This is what i did now:
1. Bridge the LAN adapter with the wireless one
2. disabled windows firewall
3. restart
4. start a new connection on wixp FIRST (right click on wireless adapter-->connect...)
5. turn on wifi on ppc (it asked on what network to connect)

With these series of actions, i do NOT lose my winxp internet connection.
What i did differently previously, was to make connection settings on the ppc FIRST, then tried to connect from winxp.

I still do not see my shared folder nor connect to internet from ppc via wifi, though in Wireless LAN settings in ppc, it says "associated to network"

Any ideas?

I know from experience how tricky it is to get an adhoc ics and network share working.
It would be far simpler to get a Wifi router and connect it to your ADSL.
Then you can connect both the PC and the PPC to the wifi and share them easily that way.
Wifi routers are very cheap these days.
I know that doesn't help with what you have, but just a thought.

Did you bridge the LAN and WiFi independently from setting up ICS. ICS should do the bridging.

I agree with Box. Ad-hoc is really a hit-or-miss process. When I was doing some testing a few years back, I used two laptops both with WinXP and similar hardware (both had built in WiFi and Ethernet adapters). One easily worked as soon as I set up ICS and made an association with my PPC (at that time I think I had an iPaq with a CF WiFi card). No matter what I did with the second PC, I could never get the ad-hoc connection to work.

Critical question.
What exactly do tou mean?
I selected both adapters (wired and wireless), and then "bridge".
Does it matter if i hadn't configured ICS first?
I thought bridging does the work.

Bridging will connect the two network adapters but will not do the rest of ICS (which includes setting up IP and allowing passthrough from the PPC to the web). ICS itself will do the bridging (it's been a long time since I did this but I think you just set up ICS on the LAN then tell the WiFi adapter to use the LAN's network access. I think it's obvious how to do this under advanced tab in the properties but post back if you have trouble).

From what you say, IKEHIKER, it seems tha the steps necessary for windows, are only these three:

1. Setup ICS on LAN adapter
2. Bridge the LAN with the WiFi adapters
3. Setup the WiFi adapter to use the LAN's network access

Are these the only three steps essential to my pc in order to share files over wifi?
Do i have to setup something else?

I say that because i found a backup image for my PPC, that some months ago i had the adhoc connection working. So if i setup the correct settings in windows and then restore that image file to my PPC, maybe it will work. What do you say?

I think your 'step 2' is included in 1 and 3 (that is, telling the adapter to use the LAN's access creates the bridge).

If the PC is set up the same as before, the backup might work but I would create a new backup (with a different name) in case you want to go back to the current setting.

Ikehiker, every single day i try to make this work.
I bridge the LAN and WIFI adapter. Now the have one IP, right?
When i make this IP specific 192.168.2.x, i lose my internet connection.
Then i make it 192.168.1.4 and frm the settings of the PPC i make its IP 192.168.1.8
THEN FOR THE FIRST TIME i can see my PC shared folders from my PPC.
AND the internet connection is working on the PC.
BUT on my PPC when i try to connect to Internet, it says "The page cannot be found. Check the name and try again."

Any ideas to configure right the IP's?
Is it possible that i have IP conflicts, so that i cannot connect to Internet through my PPC?

Bridging does not give you 'one IP.' Every device (including each network adapter) needs a unique IP.

In the process of setting the IP in the PPC, do you also enter numbers in the DNS field? When ICS is working and assigning the IPs to the devices, it would assign 192.168.1.1 as the DNS (since this is the number used as the virtual server in the ICS) but if you are entering static IPs, you should enter the DNS used by your Internet Service Provider. These are sometimes difficult to discern but sometimes the ISP's website will list them if you cannot figure them out from the settings in your router.

I finally found a way.

This is my setup in PPC:

--> in Wireless Networks-->configure-->connects to: WORK

--> in Wireless Networks-->configure-->This is a device-todevice connection

--> Settings-->WIFI-->Network Adapter-->My Network Card connects to: THE INTERNET

--> Settings-->WIFI-->Network Adapter-->SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter-->Use specific IP Address:

IP Address: 192.168.1.8
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

--> Settings-->WIFI-->Network Adapter-->SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter-->Name Servers:

DNS: 192.168.1.1

Setup in XP:

First Bridge the WIFI and LAN Adapters.
In the properties of the Bridge, in TCP/IP settings, i left the: Obtain IP Addresses automaticaly.

After establishing the WIFI connection, everything worked fine and i saw that the Bridge used the DHCP configuration:

IP Address: 192.168.1.6
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

There are 2 CRAZY things about all this stuff:

1. When i did it almost 4 or 5 months ago, i did NOT configure manually ANY IP Addresses and it worked!
2. With the current configuration and everything going nice, if i made a restart on my PC, i
COULD NOT CONNECT AGAIN!
The solution i found?
I unplugged the WIFI Adapter from the USB and plugged it again.
IT WORKED!

I hope this will help someone someday.

Thanks IKEHIKER for your attention.
