Cingular Smartphone Selections...
Well, I've been planning on switching to Cingular once my Verizon 2-yr finally ends at the beginning of June. Since I moved in January, the Verizon coverage just hasn't been that great. Cingular has excellent coverage up here (and anywhere I plan on travelling), so that's the better option for me now.

I'd had my eye on the MPX220, especially since Buy.com had a "free after rebates" deal that kept getting extended every month lately. Unfortunately, I just noticed the MPX220 is no longer being sold on Buy.com, Cingular, Amazon, etc. Has it been discontinued already? If so, does anyone know if there is a new Smartphone that Cingular is coming out with anytime soon? I really want a combined device for "majority of day" use. I use my Axim for some stuff throughout the day, but prefer to not carry it around everywhere I go. It's much easier tossing a phone in my pocket, so I'd rather go the Smartphone route than to go with a PPC phone edition.

Anyhow, please post any info you have on Cingular smartphones. I didn't see a single one on their site today. Oh, and I do know I could just go get a Cingular or unlocked smartphone and use it. But since I'll be having to sign up for a new service plan anyhow, I'd rather get it from Cingular or a Cingular dealer to take advantage of any rebates at the time.... I just really want to stay away from spending $300 on a phone right now.

That's odd the MPX220 is not sold by Cingular. Cingular is planning on selling the Audiovox SMT5600 very soon. It is the equivalent of the Orange SPV-C500. It is a great phone. AT&T used to sell the Audiovox before they merged with Cingular.

The MPx220 is temporarily unavailable I believe. They are trying to work out the bugs from what I read. The Audiovox SMT5600 is being released on Cingular, and is actually available in select areas from their website already. Check out the front page news at www.mpx200.org for info on the Cingular release. The forums also has lots of good Smartphone info.

Thanks for the update Smeg. I'll look into the MPx220 some more tomorrow and see what I can dig up. I really hope you're right about it just being a temporary unavailability, because it is the one smartphone out right now that seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. The others all have their hits and misses for me, but the MPx220 seems to be right on the money for my use.

MPx is dead. It was a piece of crap with loads of bugs and problems dont even bother getting it. The Audiovox is prolly going to be awesome but I strongly advise you to test the sound quality of the speaker and calls and volume before you buy it. I have had 4 audiovox phones that all suck speaker wise, speakphone distorts alot, volume is low compared to other brands.

MPx220
I have an MPx220 and I love it. I haven't had very many problems with it at all. It's small, yet powerful. I just wish it supported EDGE...

There should be an update being released for the MPx within this month. I have heard rumors that Cingular will begin restocking it again then. But then again, I have also heard rumors that it will not be back.

If you check in the Cingular stores, some of them may still have some MPx's. I went in one this past weekend and the store still had some in stock.

HTH

I have the MPx200 (Upgraded to WM2003) on Cingular service and couldn't be happier. I chose to get a smartphone for the same reason. I didn't want to carry both the phone and axim for calendar/contacts/tasks/E-mail so the smartphone was looking pretty nice. For when I need more power the axim will come with me though lol.

I bought my MPx200 off of eBay, and it was unlocked so I can pretty much use it until its dead with any plan I want!

I wouldnt say all the MPxs were pieces of crap...the MPx220 just had lots of problems here in the US when it first got released....things may change but I doubt it. When a company pulls a product it tends to be forever. Just like tv shows heh. NBC U NAZIS U DITCHED THIRD WATCH RGGG

I just got rid of my Mpx220, Cingular offered me a low end replacement phone and my money back for the mpx, some of them like mine had very poor audio quality from either the speaker or the handset, mine would also lock-up from time to time. If it worked like it should it would be an awesome phone.
