Another job, another phone...
Afternoon all,

Looking for a bit of advice. I'm switching jobs next month, and thus most of my gizmos and gadgets will be replaced with something else. Included in this is my phone. I'm currently using a Sony Ericsson K700i (which is great). However, as I'm using my x50v more and more for things that I presume a smartphone could handle (i.e. PIM, word, email, minimal surfing) on a daily basis, I wonder if it's time to take the plunge and get a smartphone. So, a couple of questions:

1) What do you think is currently the best smartphone on the market and why?

2) Does anyone know of any smartphones to be released in the near future?

I'm not interested in a PocketPCphone. The smartphone that I currently have in mind is the Orange SPV C500 (which is the same as your Audiovox SMT 5600 I believe).

What do I plonk for?!

Cheers

So far as i can evaluate on the things i'v read. this is according to rank.

1) Samsung SPH-i500 - really good and reliable
2) Blackberry 7210 - too big but works fine
3) PalmOne Treo 650
4) Nokia 9290 Communicator

Hope this will help

I was really unsure about the whole smartphone thing (and still am). Most of them are either too big to be a phone, or too small to be a PDA. A mate of mine got the Orange one a few weeks ago and so I had a chance to play with it in the Pub (while he played with my Axim). I think we were both impessed. The C500 works very well as a phone and would sync quite well with outlook. I'm not sure how well it would do with Word, but I will be considering it in a few months when my contract with 3 expires.

(I'd use it as well as my X50V. It wouldn't replace it though)

If I was looking for a replacement device I'd be looking at maybe a p910 (symbian but very nice), the XDAIIs or Imate Jam. But I like being able to go out to the pub and not worry about carrying my pda with me,

That's exactly how I feel. The C500 seems the best bet for me at the moment, but it's been out since October so it's getting pretty old, and I don't want to get it only to find a new one is just round the corner!

The SE P910, or XDAII are more PocketPCPhones than Smartphones, and I don't want to replace my x50v as when I can carry something that big I'll just take the x50v. When I need something phone-sized only, however, I'm goin gto have to go with either the Moto or C500 as it stands.

Decisions, decisions!

(BTW, you're on 3?!! Arrgghhhh....)

3 has been pretty good for me. The coverage isn't too bad (apart from the blackspot in our house around my favourite chair). My phone (LGU8110) was flakey 2 weeks ago and so they gave me a free upgrade to the later model (LGU8120) which works very nicely as a phone. And the call charges are great. My minimum contract expires at the end of July and I'm a pretty happy customer

BUT (you could tell theres a but comming couldn't you) The 3 network doesn't support Data calls. And now that I have an X50V a bt phone and a nice data tarrif would be great. So I'm starting to look at what Orange and Vodafone will offer me. I don't really care about having the latest sexiest phone, but at the same time I would like something 'nice'.

So let me know how you get on... It seems like we're looking for the same sort of thing

I'm on Orange for my personal mobie, have been for years and years. When I upgraded last June, they matched Videotalk 500 on 3 for me so I get 500 mins for £25 plus 60 texts thrown in, plus 3mb free of GPRS. Obviously, this is mainly for upgrade customers only. And the service is always excellent.

I'm not knocking 3; quite a few of the students I teach have them as they are very cheap with good voice calls (as they piggyback on o2 when not in 3 range).

I think I'll go to carphone warehouse at the weekend and try some of the phones out...I'll let you know what I decide!

the p910 is not a PPC phone... but the XDA is.
I myself wouldn't get a smartphone once I already have an X50v...

...but if I DIDN'T have a PDA I'd probably get either the P910 or the XDAII in black (it's sweeeeet looking)
