samsung sch-i760
I recently went to the verizon wireless store to look at an upgrade for my phone
and I saw the sch-i760. I have read a few reviews on this phone and decided i wanted it. Now the store clerk told me that if I didn't pay for internet access then it would cost me a lot of money. I asked him if I could just turn on the wifi connection(b/c i have a wireless g signal in my house) and keep the broadband connection off. He said that if I wasn't careful and I opened the internet by accident when a wifi signal wasn't around then it would automatically turn on the broadband connection and I would be charged.

Is this true?

You can completely disable the broadband phone in the connections settings and allow only wifi.

So the Sales person ipwas not correct, but doing theiir job to try to sign you up.

Personally, it seems to me that without a data plan it would really make more sense to get a PPC and not a smartphone.

Dont't get me wrong, I am using one froma car now to answer you (passenger).

It's a great device. It's just that you would be missing alot of function without a data plan.

Believe me, I know the plans are expensive (I'm paying for 2, my Son's Treo and my 760)

I'm thinking about doing the same thing because I live on a college campus where wifi is constantly available. What exactly would I be missing out on if I didn't have the data package without the broadband access? My fear is that I will be on wifi, get out of range and all of a sudden be charged a ton of money, so I want to disable that feature. Can someone help clear that up for me? Thanks!

I am in the process of possibly upgrading my Axim x51 to the SCH i760 so I can stop carrying around "two things". I've spent a lot of time at the Verizon store and reading reviews/articles.

Amanda6, with smartphones, your text messages will fall under your current text plan (if you have one), HOWEVER, picture messages will fall under your DATA plan. If you don't get one, you will not be able to send/receive pic messages (which may or may not be a big deal). If you choose the basic data plan (I tihnk its 10MB of transfered data for $24.95), be very, very careful. If you go over the 10MB, you then get charged by the KB and could rack up literally hundred's of dollars in data charges in a month.

Before you buy the phone, be sure and find out if you can DECLINE all data plans without a penalty.
