Spontaneous hard reset?
Hello - I recently bought an X3, and have been really happy with it. The only problem I'm running into is that sometimes I'll have it powered off and in my pocket, then when I pull it out, it will have a confirmation message on it about whether I want to clear all the data out, and which button to push if I do or don't. It happened several times, so I bought a little aluminum case off of Ebay for it thinking I was pushing a button combination that was causing it. Last night, it happened again, inside of the case. What combination is causing this? I thought a hard reset required the power and soft reset buttons in combination with each other...is there another key combo that can cause this?

Thanks for the forums...I've gotten several answers to other questions from here already.

Happens to me
This has been happening to me for about a year, ive worked out that it is definately something to do with hard knocks, against car doors, or just a small drops a couple of cm's and it can trigger it, however never made this happen "on demand" (nor really tried).
I've foudn that wearing it using a belt clip makes it happen more often. I've just taken to a) ensuring backup is up to date.
and b) checking it often (as the battery is drained whilst its asking and before you know it flat and youve lost it anyway.

I too had that issue at times. It was always associated with hard knocks with mine as well. It always took a really hard hit in my case, like accidentally slinging it out of the case against a hard surface.

I came to ask about the same problem!

On my x3i if I give a gentle squeeze on the frame near the audio jack I can cause the message to appear consistently. Also as was said a bump or drop can do the same thing.

I'm curious if something is getting shorted out around the audio jack.

I took mine apart but didnt see anything obvious.

looking for a solution too

You might try Dell
Apparerntly there IS a known issue with a short condition around the earphone jack/stepper switch. A gentle szueeze is all it takes, mine kept getting squeezed by the seat belt buckle in the car whan I had it on the belt clip. Worst thing was, that message stays on until the battery is completely drained.
