How to disassemble an X3i
I seem to have the dreaded Mexican blanket screen problem so many others have. Note: if you happen to have a CT scan done (you know, big, fancy X-ray machine), and the technician tells you that you don't need to empty your pockets, take your Axim out anyway. Since it powers up and seems to respond to the buttons, I want to try to just replace the screen, but I'm having problems getting my X3i completely disassembled. Is there a procedure documented somewhere showing how to get these things completely apart? I can get the case apart and most of the connectors and ribbon cables disconnected, but one ribbon cable is defying my attempts. The attached photo shows the offending ribbon cable/connector.

Thanks.

For the ribbons, flick the small sqaure grey things at either side of each ribbons upwards and this will unlock them. To re-lock them back in simply give it a shove and it'll lock itself.

Thanks for the link. That's a nice writeup. I got all the ribbon cables but one. On mine the little latches on each side of the ribbons are brown. However, the link still skips over (in step 10 it shows the ribbon already disconnected, but not how to do it) the one ribbon that's giving me trouble.

Ah, I know which one you are talking about, and I had the same problem.

To be completley honest, I left it attached, and used it as a hinge... Probably not the most sensible option, I know.

its very easy to get this ribbon out, just push both side from the opposite side with some hard tool...even plastic styls pen. Means push the white part towards the edge of the PDA. Thats it.

It's been a while since you wrote this. How did it go. I ask because I am going to have to disassemble my 3xi to fix the screen.....and I'll need all the help I can get !

How much did you spend to replace your screen?

It went pretty well.

Here is the X3i I got off ebay. The screen swap went fine. The connector I had problems with above turned out to be no problem. Just use two small screwdrivers and, pushing them toward each other, pry the connector apart. Pry between the white and black parts of the connector. The ribbon cable comes right out.
