What's the difference b'twn the X3 and X30?
..They look almost identical. Are there many internal differences? What's so differenct that it requires a whole new model name?

Well, i've been reading some online reviews and it seems these are the differences:

*The X30 series has both Bluetooth and Wifi in the wireless models
*They have an updated, and in the case of the X30H, faster, processor
*They have WM2003SE instead of WM2003

That seems to be about it. A fairly significant upgrade, I would say, and one that couldn't have been done through firmware upgrades alone, so the new model name is justified.

I'm actually glad they kept the same case design, since I think it is one of the best looking PDA's on the market by far. For some reason, i'm bothered by all the 'curvy' shapes manufacturers seem to think add 'style' to most modern PDA's, including Palms. I mostly find them all extremely ugly with a capitol u..

I believe the x3's are very hansome devices. They have a no nonsense look, like they were designed to be purely functional, much like the look of a plain white tower computer server, instead of all these weird plastic designed desktops nowadays. I believe the design is ahead of it's time and is better than the x50/x51's.

I agree with your comments on the design (except for the extended batteries ) As an x30i H owner I have had a huge range of accessories available to me since I 1st bought my axim.

I'll have my little silver ax for a long time to come. Perhaps the only things I'd like to have are wireless G (instead of B), and stable memory (so my ax could safely drain flat).

On this site you can go to Resouces menu and then Model Comparison. Select the two device, et voilà.

Yeah I am very disapointed at the performance of the standard wireless B, it's way too slow for 11mbps, it seems to perform at 3-5mbps say 1/2 megabyte a second at the best of times. It's just too slow for me, but it is still useable and valuable to have, just I have to be more patient. I am not at all concerned about the memory issue, I install all my software on my sd card, I keep nothing in main memory or inbuilt memory, so even a hard reset I have no problems with it, but I do not use the PIM features much, the only thing I have to fix up is my morning alarm call. About the battery draining flat, you can remove it and attach the + and - to a load (i think thats the right word) eg a motor or light to quickly drain the last bit of juice out and then slap it back in the axim and charge it up, hopefully the internal battery will keep things going during that time.

Frenchy I checked the comparison between the Axim X50 Mid and Axim X30 Mid.

The only difference is the cpu is at a higher frequency, has 10% more battery capability and twice as much rom. My x30 overclocks to 520mhz easy anyway matching the x50. They have identical processors, all x3 can do 520mhz.

I do not see the reason for the price difference ie $120

Didn't see the addition of a CF I/II card slot? That's significant, as it allows the use of microdrives (8GB drives are available for under $150).

lol i'm glad someone agrees with me about the design, I almost thought I was the only one since manufacturers keep putting inane shaped devices out I figured everyone must *like* them. I remeber I just about puked when I saw the Palm m100 series.

PocketBrain, no I do not believe a CF slot is worth it for microdrives. I much perfer sd cards over microdrives. I would rather 2 4gig sd cards than 1 8gig microdrive. Tell me will the microdrive still work after you drop your axim? (dropped my axim 3 times last week) Orginally an axim has no moving parts, but you add a microdrive to it and you can no longer say it has no moving parts. No I would not want a microdrive so that option is of no use to me.

To each his own. Remember, however, that the CF slot is also a CFIO slot, and there exist certain accessories including CF cameras, FM radios, 802.11g wireless cards, cell phone cards, and even SD memory adapters. You wouldn't have to swap your two 4GB SD cards then! Also, CF flash memory comes in large sizes, 4GB is about $150 at Amazon.com. A CF slot is for so much more than just microdrives.
