Add/Remove programs problems

Current position: X3 ‘formatted’ to delivery condition.
Synchronization works ok
Cannot add/remove programs

History;
A few weeks ago I started experiencing problems such as hanging when starting a program and freezing on connecting to cradle, and failure to synchronize.
So I tried all the usual things, powering off and on the X3 and the laptop I use for synching, backing up and then deleting files, and even used different versions of AciveSync.

Yesterday I reverted the X3 back to its delivery condition, i.e. no added programmes etc. Synchronization now works, but I can’t add any programmes, so considering I use it as satnav tool and a comprehensive planner (using a third party application) I’m stuffed and the thing is useless! Can anyone help??!!

Can you provide more details about not being able to add/remove programs? What error message do you get, etc.? Have you tried CAB file installers?

The error message is as follows;
"Unable to retrieve the mobile device inforamation. Please reconnect and try again."

This message is produced when initiating the Add/Remove programme functionallity from the ActiveSync tools menu.
I don't know what the CAB file installers are, sorry.

Dont go above version 3.8 of activesync on your laptop. Then delete any old partnerships you may have listed. Then create a new partnership with activesync.

You might want to try changing your device ID as well. Can the X3 make that change by clicking on Start > Settings > System About?

Have you tried reinstalling ActiveSync? Also, what happens when you click on an .exe installer file? Will it install?

UPDATE:
Have now tried ActiveSync 3.7 & 3.8 to no avail. AS installed ok, recognised device when it was connected, and that was it; did not even synchronize this time. Installed my other application(s) in an attempt to transfer to the X3, but nothing. I'm stumped, it functions perfectly as a stand alone piece of IT but does not synchronize.
