Tried everything - please help!
I know y'all sick of ActiveSync questions, but pls help because I'm tearing my hair out!! I've spent days browsing this forum for a solution...

My Axim X3 is not detected by ActiveSync on my laptop. I have tried just about everything suggested on these forums, including
- upgrade the ROM to the A02 version
- hard reset, soft reset, take out the main battery

I have determined it is not a problem with
1. The laptop's USB ports: both work perfectly with other devices.
2. the USB cable: well, pretty sure this is not the problem since I have 2 USB cables, it's unlikely both failed and one is a retractable Ziplinc cable that charges the Axim w/out problem
3. the pins: I can charge my Axim
4. the backup battery: according to the Axim, it is 'normal'.
5. firewalls, anti-virus software: all turned off

I have ActiveSync 3.7.1: I had upgraded to 4.1, it didn't work, downgraded back to 3.7.1 (and yes I cleared out all dll's, folders, etc.) and it still didn't work. My laptop is running XP Home SP2. Note that ActiveSync did work in the past -- one day it just suddenly stopped detecting the PDA.

Any suggestions?

It dosent seem to be a hardware problem. But if you could take your Axim to another computer, install Activesync that would certainly rule out any issues with the Ax.

On Activesync, File > Get Connected > Next, does it detect the PPC when properly cradled?

Nope
I turned off the Windows Firewall completely. Same with anti-virus. Didn't install any new software.

I tried the File | Get Connected command in ActiveSync too. It just goes through the same routine, trying to detect the Axim and failing. BTW, I don't have a cradle but I don't think that matters.

I only have one computer -- I will try to get a friend to let me use his, but in the meantime, your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you connect the Axim to the PC is the Axim visible in Device Manager?

Be aware that turning off some firewalls actually leaves a PC in a restricted state. I assume you have no other firewalls installed apart from the windows one?

I only have Windows Firewall. I have tried both turning it off completely and leaving it on with exception made for ActiveSync -- makes no difference.

I do not see anything about Dell or Axim or PDA in any of the categories in the Device Manager on my laptop (I assume it's Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager you're talking about.)

Frustrating, isn't it?

If you connect via sync cable and the PC dosent see it then it can only be one of three things.

1) The cable is faulty.
2) ActiveSync on the Axim has a problem.
3) The drivers on your PC for USB and\or ActiveSync's generic drivers are the problem.

Since you have 2 cables and already upgraded the ROM we can eliminate 1 & 2. More often than not I think I have seen connection problems being on the PC side rather than the hand held.

I have to go back to my other idea, that if you could take the axim to another computer. Plug it in just to see if you get the hardware wizard. You dont have to install it. But if you could proceed to install ActiveSync you could certainly isolate the problem.

Edit: Do you have an IR port to use?
