I just got the x3i, one problem though
Hello everyone.
I'm new to the PPC and I'm glad I found this resource, these forums are great.
I got the x3i from Ebay a couple days ago but have been unable to connect to the internet through my home or work network. I've tried every setting on the Axim and my router while following the tutorial here: http://wifi.aximsite.com/ and soft reset the Axim after making changes each time. The only things I haven't tried is a hard reset and reinstalling the WiFi utility software.
I see most people have moved on to better Axims but my needs are fairly modest for now, I'd just like to get the full functionality of this device.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks.

Please excuse the previous response. This is the third time today I've seen someone respond to a new member's question with a pointless 'welcome.' It's fine to be welcoming but I'd like to see it coincide with some actual help.

Sorry to doubt that you followed all the advice in the WiFi Guide but here are the points to consider with the X3i.

1st, make sure you have the latest ROM. I believe this is the last but there are also a couple of patches you may also want to install.

2nd, make sure your Router is set to mixed mode (B+G) if it is a G router and disable the enhanced features if it is an enhanced/extended G router (advertised as working at 108mbps).

3rd, try disabling all security on the router to see if you can connect. Add back the security (I recommend 64-bit WEP & MAC filtering) one at a time making sure the connection still works.

4th, try the Welcome screen fix:

5. You will go through the welcome screen like you did when you first got your PPC (Note: Even though this will take you through the same process like after a hard reset, this is not the same as a hard reset. Your data/programs will not be lost).

Hey Ike ...

You're still ahead of me

Glad that you refer to the 'tiny reset' by Markprieb ...

"1st, make sure you have the latest ROM"

I'm using the old A00c - and it works OK - even with the Power Management turned ON !

Thanks again for all your assistance

Thank you both very much for the welcome and assistance and sorry I wasn't more specific on the details.

I went and downloaded the latest ROM from the link provided and installed - A0101050400EN and then soft reset. I double checked the WiFi tutorial to make sure I had settings correct for the Axim. Next I checked the configuration of the router, mixed mode and it isn't an enhanced G router, set to channel 6, security and MAC filter disabled (I had the Mac filter set with the MAC address of the Axim included). I noticed when I turn on the WiFi on the Axim and it scans for channels it goes from channel 12 to a random number then back to 12 etc. Is there a way to set the channel manually to match the router channel 6 because the router doesn't have a channel 12?
Anyway after disabling the security settings I set the router to transmit the SSID so wireless devices can connect, I have a Linksys wireless game adapter that connected without having to take all these steps when I got it, I just plugged it in and it was recognized.
When that wasn't working in the advanced wireless settings on the router I set the basic rate from default to 1-2Mbps which according to the documentation is for compatibility with older Wireless-B devices. When that wasn't working I set the transmission rate from auto, range is from 1 to 54Mbps to just 2Mbps and tried to transmit the SSID again but still nothing. Finally I tried setting CTS protection mode to auto which "will ensure that your Wireless-B devices will connect to the Wireless-G Router when many Wireless-G devices are present. However, performance of your Wireless-G devices may be decreased". I even tried to set the mode to B only and again transmitted the SSID but still no go.
After that I tried the welcome screen fix and soft reset and tried to connect again going through the above steps but the router and the Axim still won't detect each other.

Are there other things I can try to make this work?

Again, thanks for any and all help provided because even if I don't get it connected it's definitely a learning experience.

Just in case there is some interference on 6, try channel 1 or 11 (PPCs seem to have a harder time associating when there is an interferring signal).

Make sure there is nothing is the proxy field - on the Proxy server tab (Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Set up my Proxy server).

Check for firmware upgrade for your router.

Check for firmware upgrade for your router.
Tried the other channels and there is nothing in the proxy on the x3i.

The latest firmware for the router fixes these problems:

Firmware 1.00.9
- Resolves issue with MAC cloning
- Resolves issue with L2TP connection
- Resolves issue with using DNS server behind the router
- Resolves issue with loading configuration through HTTPS
- Resolves issue with PPPoE CHAP authentication
- Resolves issue with using Ping Plotter
- Resolves issue with SSH disconnects
- Resolves issue with DHCP WAN connection not acquiring the correct IP
- Resolves issue with UPnP
- Adds support for WRT54G v.6
- Resolves issue with Access Restriction
- Resolves issue with incorrect time display
- Resolves issue with using subnets other than 255.255.255.0
- Resolves security issue when using IRC
- Resolves issue with WAN address being pingable when port forwarding is enabled
- Resolves issue with using Kultalinkki banking software
- Resolves issue where web GUI becomes unreachable if remote management is enabled on port 80 or 443
- Resolves issue with slow internal loopback, i.e., accessing a local server through the WAN IP address
- Resolves issue with accessing online game servers

I have the firmware before this and I don't want to upgrade if it won't fix the problem I have.
While searching for updated firmware for the router I did find out because it's based on Linux, that there are 3rd party upgrades with many enhanced features that Linksys didn't intend. Unfortunately I have a version 5.0 and from then on you can't use 3rd party firmware.

That's over my head and I can't compete with Ike - he's THE expert - but, when I - in rare cases - can't connect immediately to my linksys, then I use WiFiFoFum v0.3.3
Nice feeware ...

If you got any specific questions to my x3i-linksys setup, feel free to ask

Thanks Zaniax.

I emailed the Ebay seller I got it from and he only said it was tricky to set up for WiFi, no specific problems with it though.
Is there an external card I can get for the Axim for WiFi that's not too expensive?

I'll try out the WiFiFoFum software and see if it helps.

I got WiFiFoFum installed and after fiddling around with the settings (not really knowing what I'm doing) it recognised my AP and a few other local ones.
I thought I'd be able to connect but still it will not.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

"it recognised my AP and a few other local ones"

Look at the 'Channel' setting in WFFF.
Anyone using the same channel as your router?
Then change you own channel something else 'far away' - say 1,6 or 11.
