Unknown device in Slot 1
50% or more of the time I get a 'Unknown device in Slot 1' error when turning on WiFi (hard button, bottom right). If I turn it off an back on a few times, it eventually will work. I've had this problem since day 1 and received no help from Dell. Anyone else seeing something like this? Fix?

Wifi not working
I have encountered the same problem over the past few days. I tried everything; I took of the case off and reconnected the wifi antenna to the motherboard, performed a hard reset and rom upgrade and still no luck. I even downloaded the dell axim x3 diagnostic utilities which tests wifi. The result of the wireless diagnostics kept telling me to turn on the wireless antenna which I think pretty much tells me my antenna needs to be replaced. You may want to try what I tried. If you are hesitant about taking the axim case apart to check your wifi radio connectivity this web link shows a video on how to do it ( http://www.gethightech.com/Merchant2...egory_Code=RD). Unfortunately there seems not to be many answers on the web for this problem. Good luck!

Please me posted as to your success with fixing the problem. Mine has been like this since day one. I have no problem with opening the Axim, but before I do I'd like to make sure I have whatever I need to fix it on hand. When it works, the Axim is my Skype phone when I don't have a laptop with me. It would be a heck of a lot better if it also had Bluetooth, but that is a sad tale for another day :rolling:

I suggest you open up the case just to make sure the white wire from the wireless antenna is attached firmly to the wifi card on the motherboard. It looks as thought the wifi card is embedded into the motherboard on the axims X3's, so I am not sure if the wifi card can be replaced. I am having a very difficult time trying to get an answer from all the sources I am searching. Yes I also used my wifi X3 as a skypephone too, and to also watch slingbox TV when not surfing the web. Yes not having wifi stinks. An SDIO wifi card can be obtained from buy.com for around $50, but then you will have to keep switching your data sd card when not using wireless, since unfortunately this device also does not have a CF slot. It is all one big pain. I will keep you posted if I find out anything significant. Please do the same for me. Thanks!

Yes, I have updated my firmware. I also checked the 'white wire' and no obvious problem there. One thing I've noticed... if any program is running that uses the WiFi interface, such as Skype, I get the slot 1 failure 100% of the time. If I close Skype and any other WiFi programs and then try to activate the WiFi interface it usually works. You might give this a try and see if it helps. Be especially careful of Skype. I don't know why, but it was very difficult to get it to shut down completely. Anyway, give this a try and let me know what happens.

Hey thanks for the skype advice. Unfortnately for me I just cannot get wifi working period. I keep getting that "unkown card in socket 1"" message all the time without any open applications. I recently noticed on ebay someone selling spare internal wifi cards and antenna's for axim x30's. I thought about buying one but when I opened my x3 pocket pc I noticed that the wifi chip looks embedded into the mother board, so I do not undertand how that can be changed (unless the motherboard is much different for the x30 than the x3)? Anyway I put in a few emails to the buyers of those replacement wifi cards to see if I can learn anything from them. What ever I learn I will shar with you. I am also wondering if this problem can be caused by a faulty antenna alone?
Also after putting "unkown card in socket 1" into a google search I stumbled upon a series of blog interactions about this errro message from axim owners. It seems all owners believed the problem involved missing wifi drivers within the ROM. All owners who encountered this problem in the blog were still under warranty and Dell's way of solving the problem was to provide them with a warranty replacement. Unfortunately Dell did not provide these individuals with any definate answer, they just replaced their products under warranty.
Any way, unfortunately, the saga continues....
