Weird issue
I've had my Axim since 2004 and have been very happy with it. Recently the battery stopped holding the charge (it would drain quite fast once out of the craddle).

I bought a replacement battery online (Type X111 Li-Ion 3.7V 950mAh). I charged the new battery but it also did not hold the charge. I contacted the vendor and they said that since the battery had been on their shelves for a long time that I needed to fully charge it and discharge it between 3 to 5 times to recondition it. I did this and at first it seemed that the issue was resolved.

Here is the weird part, I have noticed that if I keep the Axim at home (out of the craddle) it will hold the charge for several days and discharge normally. However, every time I leave my home and go about town the Axim drains quite rapidly. For example today it went from 100% charged to 42% charged in less than 2 hours and then to 20% in another 2 hours. The discharge is accompanied by the message: "To clear all data in the memory press XX. To cancel this operation press XX".

Any words of wisdom will be appreciated.

That's beginning to sound like an application is running on the device and not letting it go into standby mode. Have you tried a soft reset? If not, maybe a hard reset/re-install will clear it.

The fact that you've had it for 2 years and now all-of-a-sudden it's draining batteries definitely suggests that something is running on the machine that is preventing it from hibernating. That rate-of-drain of the battery is about what you would see if you were playing a game on it for a couple of hours or something. Make sure all programs are shut down and see if the problem persists.

Thanks CB. There are no (visible) programs running at this point (only the calendar which does not have many events with timers) and I've done soft resets multiple times at this point. Could it be something other than the battery, like the system board maybe?

The fact is seems to loose juice when you leave the house makes me wonder if bluetooth is turned on and when you are out and about, it is expending energy trying to associate with every bluetooth device it gets within 10m of.
