X3 - Internet Failure

I know there are several posts all over the internet and several here, but I've yet to have any luck. I can not get the internet working on my X3. It has ROM 02 (A02?) and the most recent driver for the wifi card (Just Mobile). When I have it set so the network assigns an IP, I get the unable to obtain IP and it shows my network to be unavailable. However, when I use a static IP, the one suggested on several forums, I get the, "can not find page" error or IE just sits there trying to load. My network is WEP encrypted and I've punched in the right key, so that shouldn't be the problem. I've been messing around with this thing for a week now and am about to break it! Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and a sidenote question. I put on the Dell self diagnostic and vxUtility. It is now randomly making a horse hee hawing sound. Any ideas?

Have you tried it without WEP? And when you say you've 'punched in the right key,' you are using the hexadecimal version (10- or 26-characters), right? And if you are using the hex key, you are using a 'zero' and number 'one' (never the letters 'O' or 'l')?

Look at the Check these first part of the Troubleshooting section of the WiFi Guide for more possibilities (these are mainly focused in Axims with builtin WiFi but the same issues can exist with WiFi adapters).

I agree with Ikehiker, turn off WEP and see if you can connect. You may also want to use the mac address as your security setting. I have a linksys that allows entering the mac address of each wireless device to be used on the network and then all others trying to access the network are denied.

Yes, I'm using the 64 bit 10 hex digits code, not the passphrase. I work at Starbucks, so I'm taking with it to work today to see if it works there, rather then turning off the security setting here. Does every wireless device have a preset mac address, or would I have to set those up first? I only know basic stuff, and I've never used the mac addresses before.

Yes each individual machine has its own mac address. If you search XP help, it will tell you how to find it for each computer. The dell utility, I think, will help you find it for the pda.

Since you have a WiFi sdio card, the MAC will probably be printed on the card (12-character hexadecimal usually written as a series of doublets: ab-cd-ef-01-23-45). If it isn't on the card, the card's driver utility will probably show it or you can install vxUtil.
