Replacing Battery with dead backup cell

My 3Xi has a failed backup battery. I have read much on replacing it myself, or sending it for repair.

At the moment, its not a big deal, but I do want to buy a new main battery, and would like to know if its okay to plug the device into the charger, and pull out the main battery, to replace it. Its not the end of the world if I lose everything, just wondering if that would save me the trouble of reloading since the backup is bad?

I ask because I know some electronics don't like to have the power cord plugged in when there is no battery, maybe for loading or regulating, but either way, will it hurt the Axim if I run it off the power cord, without the main battery installed.

Anyone done this?

Thanks

John

1: Back up all information to an SD card, then remove the stylus, SD card and battery.
2: Pop off all the rubber pads and remove the screws.
3: Pull off the back plate (be very careful when doing this), unplug all wires and cables (don't pull out cables that are soddered in place).
4: Remove the screws and flip over the motherboard.
5: Pull off the wires from the backup battery with a pliers and tape them back on the new backup battery with electric tape.
6: reassemble and charge for eight hours.
I'm not responsible for any damage to your Axim if anything goes wrong.

Not at all :)

I've run my X5 and X51v without a battery (although it will automatically turn off when the battery door is removed so I would just have it off to begin with). I'm pretty sure you'll be able to change the main battery without losing everything but you might try making an ActiveSync backup just in case (or the Dell backup, whichever one you were not referring to).

Thanks, that's good to know. A sync backup is certainly called for :-)
