Still Need Help?
I see this entry was made almost one month ago with over 100 views and no help responses, does not seem like a very friendly bunch, not good.

If the x3 was purchased used, then your battery is likely wearing down. You should look into purchasing a new after-market (never a dell they are too pricey) extended battery on Ebay, you can get them dirt cheap for the x3's these days. I would not bother with the standard-sized batteries, they only last half as long.

As for the wifi, if your axim x3 is the 400mhz axim it should have an integrated wireless B card in it's circuit board, so no need to buy a wireless card (although I do believe one of the X3 models only had bluetooth and not wifi, but if you have a TM wifi setting you likely have the wifi feature). Just push the thin horizontal right end button on the bottom of your axim to activate your wifi. The Axim should pickup your home wifi signal and request you to enter your security code if your home network is secure.

Good luck and repost if these comments are insufficient!

WEP, not WPA
If the Axim came with the original battery, it's a goner. Most batteries of this type can handle just a little over 500 full charge cycles (just under 2 years if you are using it daily and putting it in the charger). After that the battery will gradually build less and less charge and will therefore drain much faster, the "original" battery that came with my Axim lasts only about 45 minutes with no WiFi, about 20 minutes if I turn on the wireless ethernet. You can buy a replacement battery for less than 10 bucks at e-bay, brand new, I bought 3 .
The WiFi will drain your battery very fast, even if new, do not expect more than about 50 minutes or so of continues surfing time. If you plan to use it that way, then buy the extended capacity battery, it's just a few bucks more and almost doubles your fun. As for the WiFi, this is an older Wireless B type builtin card, that means you must set your router to mixed or compatibility mode, so it will allow both B and G type connections. You'll have to read the documentation of your router or fart around with it to find where that setting is, usually in the same admin page where you set the channel, SSID, etc. Once that's set correctly, your Axim should be able to see the access point and will try to connect whenever you turn on the WiFi antenna. That's the square button on the bottom right side, looks more like a tab. Push it once and the blue antenna at the top will light up, bingo! Push it again and it will turn off the antenna. If you set security in your router and chose a password you should have an opportunity to enter it when the Axim tries to connect, otherwise you can enter the password in the connection properties (double tap the name of your connection, there will be a tab for entering the network key). I hope this helps.
