Once Again The Forum saved me time. My X5 screen stopped working after it fell out of my pocket into the damp, just cultivated garden dirt. It had dirt on the screen which I wiped off . the screen worked initially then stopped responding to any touches. Repeated soft resets did not correct the problem. Using the above advice I took out the battery for two minutes and while I was waiting did a full "dust off" air cleaning of every crevice, opening the X5 has, including the edge of the screen. I looked there to see if dirt was trapped under the edge. There was not. It now works. I was set to do a hard reset but once again the collective experience of other Dell Axim users saved the day. Thanks

What is disconcerting to read is this problem can reoccur even without dropping. Is it the sign of an aging screen?
