WIFI Connectivity
So Ive had the Axim for a couple of weeks now.

My two biggest gripes are :-

(i) Battery consumtion, moving from my Palm V that need charging once every now and again to a unit that burns through the battery in less than a day is painful.

(ii) The biggest pain I have is network connectivity. The unit never automatically connects to my home network, I have to go to site survey, profile choose the ssid, hold on there and choose connect, sometimes I have to do this many times to get a connection and sometimes I just give up. Once connected the connection never drops out, only ever seems to run at 1mbps, but doesnt drop. I see others have similar issues. I have done everything mentioned here wep, no wep, static dhcp etc etc all to no avail. Ive ensured that my router has latest firmware and have walked around house with laptop to ensure signal is good, get low signal in some areas but still connect with laptop.

The only other area I believe it could be is a 802.11G to 802.11B conversion as I am using the DLINK DI 624 802.11G router, do people have issues with 802.11B or are we all having issues with 802.11G routers ?

Finally, If anyone finds a high capacity battery in the standaerd form factor...

1. When you trade from a 160x160 mono screen to a 320x240 lit coloured screen, a CPU with 100 times the horsepower and >10 times the memory you'll get a performance hit on the battery. You'll get used to the regular charging though.

2. Loads of people seem to have problems with wifi. There are plenty of reasons from faulty hardware to user error.

I don't use WM2003 nor the Axim X3i so can't be too much help there. In the wireless forum there is an FAQ in the first thread which might be worth a read. Nothing specific to this problem but something in there might give you some insight or a hint to the problem. One thing I did hear that is problematic on WM2003 is running with SSID Broadcast disabled. Is this the case for you?

If you use other networks, and never disconnect from the last one you used it wont automatically look for another network unless you reactivate it. I learned this because i go scavenger hunting for servers now with the site survey at random places :-D

I have an X3i with a microsoft wap and it connects fine, never drops. I have a friend who has a netgear wap and it connects fine with that as well.

Work has an 11g access point and I have no problems with that as well. Maybe i got lucky...

Had access to a 802.11B router for a few hours, connected instantly - at long distance

My Axim X3i, My DLINK Di-624 802.11G -

Even if it still has issues going forward - AXIM X3i vs HP 4155

PRO
Screen, better than IPAQ
More memory
Cost

CON
Potential WIFI issues
WIFI WART - Ugly bugly
WIFI on hard button, HP software implementation far cleaner

Ill be staying with AXIM X3i

help for wi-fi problem
I failed to conncet my "Axim3i with integrated wi-fi" to D-link DI 514 t802.11b wirelss router. But I can connect my laptop to my router at certain channel ( channnel 1).
"Axim self diagnosti" can give me the infomation about my LAN MAC;wireless is enabled; in profile->networks to access, if I chose only "computer- to -computer" or "all available", some time, my PDA can connect to an unknown computer ( Mabye a wireless server of my department), but no infomation about "link quality" or "strength" in dell wlan utility->status . If I selected only "access points", there is nothing in my site survey.
Can anybody help me out with problem? Is there any possibility that I shall reinstall my wifi's driver? But how to do it without software?

Thanks,

Buli

I have noticed that the X3i will not connect to an AP that is not broadcasting SSID. Once I turn the Broadcast ON everything works fine. Seems odd that the device will not connect to a non-broadcast SSID.

Using a linksys wireless router.

Very odd wi-fi behavior... I also had SSID broadcast disabled and WEP encryption. I was able to connect last night (I received by X3i yesterday), but not at all today. Laptop fine (so I think my Linksys WAP is still okay).

Here's the odd part. I temporarily checked the "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks" box, and tried to get an 'ad hoc' network going at work today to my laptop (no, did not get that working). Also tried loading PocketHosts.

Since I got back, the X3i wants to connect to my neighbor's network. Keeps getting an IP in his range, not mine, and nothing I do seems to be able to change the X3i's mind. Soft reset, etc. I have tried to "Remove Settings" from their wireless network configuration, but the WLAN Utility will not allow me to do so. Not sure what that command is for . And, I still can not connect to my network (less than 10 feet from WAP).

I have enabled SSID broadcast (temporarily), but so far, still can't connect. Will post back if I resolve it. I fear attempting the 'ad hoc' may have dones something bad. A hard reset may be required. Unreal -- I've reset this new Dell more times in my first 24 hours than I reset my Palm Vx in a year. Of course, my Palm Vx didn't have Wi-Fi or any of the other X3i goodies...

Woo Hoo! Bizzarre, but I'm happy (for now). After exhausting everything else, I finally did a hard reset. Before 1st sync, I renamed the device from Pocket_PC (I know Microsoft networks don't like the underscore, and my DHCP server is a MS server). Start - Settings - System - About - Device ID - then change Device name to a legitmate NETBIOS name (no spaces or special chars, etc.). Then, I created a new partnership on my PC. Then, I simply enabled wireless, entered my WEP key (the same key I've been entering all along), and it worked! Like magic. I even was able to ActiveSync via 802.11b first time -- no hassle. I hope that hard reset did the trick.

I am using both, the X5 and the X3i for testing at work with WIFI. For the X5 I have a Cisco wireless card using LEAP. Absolutely no problems at all. Battery consumption is very low in comparison to the X3i. I am how ever having an issue with the X3i in not being able to be LEAP compatible. Does anyone know of a fix, patch for this using the built in wireless on the X3i ? Any help is much appreciated.

I have 2 cisco access points and 1 3com access-router. The cisco access points work perfectly. The 3com drops signal all the time. Is there software available to fix this problem ?

Hi ALL,
I have a D-Link 624 and I have 2 desktops, 1 laptop and an X3i. I face the same problem faced by Stixy. The laptop doesnt loose its signal and doesnt expect me to keep configuring my profile all over again. I have the SSID broadcast turned off and have WEP enabled with128 bit encryption. The moment I turn my SSID, the x3i finds the network and works without problems. The moment I turn it off, it still works fine until I shut the wireless off for the day and resume it. The one thing that works fine in this situation is to manually remove all other networks that it found. Shut the wireless for a minute and turn it on and it still connects to the home network without any problems. One more thing, I have done is to issue a static IP for the DELL device from the router. Try this and let me know if it works.

So now I have it all working.

Well I must be the lucky one because I do not seem to have all the problems that I have been reading about here. Occasionally I may have to soft-boot because the WifI in my X3i won't connect to anything but a soft-boot clears it right up. Mostly I have no problem connecting to multiple networks (home, work, tmobile, etc.) without having to do anything special.

One thing about disabling SSID Broadcasting though -- bad idea. From some recent readingon wifinetworks.com, it does not really do much in terms of security at all and it causes performance degradation of WLANs due to increased packet traffic as a result. I thought it was interesting reading.

For what it's worth, I'm on the list to receive the beta of the Aegis LEAP supplicant for WM2003. Supposedly by the end of the month. I'll let you know how it works. We use LEAP where I work as well.
