Just to clarify, the connection speed is the speed at which the wireless devices have agreed to exchange individual frames. So 2Mb/s means that the frames are sent at a rate that will allow 2Mb/s of data. The throughput is how much actual data gets sent (+/- overhead, depends how you measure it).
So my PPC wifi driver reports the connection speed (11Mb/s typically) although my throughput is nowhere near that.
You should be able to connect at 11Mb/s but you won't be able to sustain much more than 2Mb/s of throughput.
If you can only connect at 2Mb/s then it's possibly a range/interference issue or maybe there is some sort of clocking issue between the devices? Preamble or speed set incorrectly?
