Axim X3i - Dell WLAN Utility icon?
Hi,

I bought my first PDA 2 days ago, but I am having a bit of a problem trying to get the wireless LAN to activate.

According to its built in help there is meant to be a Dell LAN Utility icon in Start -> Settings -> Connections, but there isn't the only 3 icons are Beam, Connections and Wireless Ethernet, but none of these search or connect to a WLAN, they only seem change settings and not connect.

In the Wireless Ethernet icon it says there is a Dell TM1200 WLAN Module and there are 3 other Miniport connections.

According to the hand book it says to press the bottom right button to activate the Wireless LAN, but on mine it just launches Windows Media Player, and it says to click Start -> Settings -> Wireless Ethernet and press Add, but there is no add button there.

I have installed the Dell™ Axim™ X3 Self-Diagnostic Utility which is supposed to test every thing, but there is no test for a Wireless connection etc. So I installed pocketWiNc2003, but that couldn't find the adaptor and closed.

I have searched the web for a Dell WLAN Utility and a driver, but I found nothing.

Any ideas how to get it working or have they sent me the X3; instead of X3i that I ordered?!

Thanks for any help

Does your X3 have the black antenna on top?

No, and all the about screens and under the battery it says its an X3. So I guess it must be cheaper X3 version even though I paid the extra for the X3i for it to work on my wireless network.

They must have got my order mixed up!

Their support and orders line aren't much good they are based in Asia or somewhere and cos English isn't their first language they can hardly understand me!

take a look at the picture of the x3i at the following link. if yours does not have the antenna on top like this one does, then you need to call Dell ASAP to have this mistake fixed.

Did your invoice show an X3i? How much were you charged?

The invoice shows a: Axim X3 400MHz, 64MB Flash ROM, USB Cradle + Case, Microsoft Pocket PC 2003. But they have charged me £279 which is what the web site says is for the X3i

But the email invoice they sent me shows a: Dell Axim X3i Wireless, Quantity: 1.

I have rung them 5 times now in the past week and still they haven't said that they will send me my correct order!!

They just say we are looking into it, and will ring back later or the next day, but they never do!!! I think I am going to have to wait until Wednesday and if I still can't get them to correct my order I will just ask for a refund and buy an iPAQ instead!

a month and a half? holy shit! You have some patience.... I would have been on the phone 24/7... I am surprised that a reputable company like dell dicked you like that... Happy to hear they eventually fixed the problem.. What a mistake..

Whey I did finally get it!!! It came yesterday and its the right one!

Most of the time I was on to them 24/7 and every time I rang they said: "We are currently looking into the problem and we are waiting for the Axim department to email us back with the correct product number"

It took them about 2 weeks to work out that they had put down the wrong product number on the order and then it took them 3 weeks to get the right product number from the Axim department and then about 3/4 day to redeliver!!
