wireless on/off switch doesn't?
I just swapped my X3 with an X3i - did a backup and restore of all the data and programs, which seemed to work fine.

However, I can't seem to turn on the wireless - the on/off button just starts Media Player, like it did on the X3. I checked the button configuration utility, but wireless isn't one of the button options.

I'm wondering if by restoring my X3 backup to the X3i, I somehow overwrote the portion of the operating system that controls the wireless, effectively converting my X3i to an X3?

(the wifi setup utility does appear in the "connections" screen, fwiw).

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Russ

That's very odd. A backup should not overwrite any portion of the OS's image in the ROM. Unless Dell is keeping up with this in a registry key that got overwritten, I'd be calling or e-mailing tech support.

I made a new backup, then performed a hard reset. During the initial setup process, there is a step that involves activating the wireless function that I didn't see the first time. I was able to activate the wireless, and the wireless switch worked fine. However, as soon as I restored the backup, the problem reappeared.

Summary: It looks like restoring an X3 backup set will prevent the X3i wireless from working.

Sorry to hear that. If this is able to be overwritten by the backup, then it is obviously an accessible setting somewhere. It's possible that it is in the registry somewhere, but that's just a guess.

I have been backing up my X3i from the first day I had it with no problems with Wi-Fi, if anything a few time backup restored it to working.

The issue isn't with backing up and restoring the X3i, it's with using an image from an X3, and restoring to an X3i.

Try going to START___SETTINGS___BUTTONS, then set it back up.

I tried that first - the wireless power button is not available.

I think what deftech says makes a lot of sense. If i were writing a backup utility i would be making a copy of the registry for sure. If the wifi settings/setup utility relies on certain entries their and the backup utility simply replaces the registry rather than adds/updates the registry then it would screw it up and i guess dell may not have thought about people using an x3 backup on an x3i.

That was my logic. Many times, these types of things are just simply items that were overlooked when making out test case scenarios. It should be an easy fix in a future ROM update, if Dell is aware of the problem.
