X3i - Unrecognized card error
My X3i's wireless functionalilty is broken. I was making changes with the SSID on my router (enabling, disabling), and I went to turn the Axim's wireless back on and I got the dreaded "Unrecognized Card" error, saying "Unknown card in Socket 1". Multiple hard resets have not made a difference (fail).

I searched the site last night and saw that other users have experienced this problem as well. I will document the differences between my X3i and the one that they send me. Maybe the new one will work consistantly with Broadcast SSID turned off.

BTW, I had no luck calling Dell's tech support last (Friday) night. The Axim prompts took me to Dimension support, at which point they put me back into the Axim queue, which in turn took me back to Dimension support, which is when I gave up. I called them back Saturday morning and a new unit is on the way.

I'm afraid I've joined the "unrecognized card" error club as well. Mine was fine for almost two months, and then I started getting the error almost every time I tried to turn on the WiFi card. A hard reset seemed to fix it for about a week, but then it started up again yesterday.
After an hour on hold last night (I also got diverted to desktop support) and a really terrible phone connection to India they are supposed to be sending me a replacement. I just hope it works OK.

I just received my x3i yesterday morning (shipped next day air) only to have it do the same to me about an hour into "playing" with it.

I too called support and they are sending me a new unit to replace it. I guess since the 802.11 circuitry is integrated there is no other way to fix it, but it seems to me there has to be SOME way.

Anyone else experience this problem and FIXED it without a replacement ? ?

Have you all tried it with a 3rd party driver?

If the x3i still uses the 1180 circuitry, you could probably use the Orinoco drivers.

I have never used the dell drivers on my x5.

Should have left it alone
I got my refurbished X3i from Dell last Monday and everything was working as expected. No "Unrecognzed card error". I was using 64bit WEP with no MAC filtering, and was broadcasting the SSID. I also installed the 3 patches; the LONUPUTY patch, along with patches R70304 and R70305. Again, no problems until I got frisky Saturday morning.

I decided to try disabling the SSID once again, to see if this unit acted differently that my old unit and here is what happened.

1. I disabled the wireless power save mode on the X3i. No problem, still connected.

2. I went into my router settings (Linksys BEFW11S4v1) and disabled "Broadcast SSID", no problem, still connected but as we all know the problem is when you turn off the X3i's wireless then turn it back on.

3. When I turned on the wireless, the unrecognized card error came back , and now that makes two Axims in two weeks that have broken in this manner.
