Accessing shared files on PC via WiFi
....I'm anticipating the answer to my query may be a 'router' issue, however would be grateful for any advice.

I recently got an X3i and I'm using the WiFi function with my PC to access the internet from the sofa. Works great. Now I want to access my shared files folder on my PC (I'm running WinXP). I've noticed that I can 'see' my shared files folder from X3i when my XP firewall is down, but I cannot see it when XP firewall is enabled.....clearly I don't want to disable my XP firewall for any length of time.

I'm using a Linksys BEFW11S4 (Access point router with 4 port hub) and Resco file explorer.

Can anybody advise what ports I need to enable/disable on my PC to allow me to penetrate the XP built in firewall with my X3i WiFi? Many thanks in advance.

Andrew

Try enabling connections on ports 137, 138 and 139. They're the standard Netbios ports.

Isn't there a firewall in your Router??? Why not shut off the one in XP and use the one in the router?

I wouldn't rely on the Windows XP firewall. It only looks at inbound traffic, and NOT outbound (Trojans, e.g.). You are better off using one of the available FREE personal firewalls such as Sygate, Zone Alarm, or Tiny's Personal Firewall, to name just a few. Personally I use Sygate's Personal Firewall and have had no problems with it playing nicely with my Axim.
