Have you installed the A01 patch? It fixes issues with the backup battery among other things.

Just using the cradle and the wall outlet, no third party accessories.

My X3i is about 2 weeks old, and I've noticed the backup battery doesn't stay at 100% for very long after I pull it off the cradle... and the percentage doesn't creep down like the main battery (100...99...98...97...etc), the backup jumps down from 100 to 80 in one step. I haven't timed it to see how long it takes to step down to 80, but I'd guess it happens after 15-20 minutes of use off the cradle. BTW, I haven't installed any patches...but since mine is fairly new, maybe it's already patched?

So even when yours is on the cradle for a substantial period of time it never reaches 100%? Does it drop below 80% much/ever? If not, maybe Dell just measures the voltage of the backup battery in a quirky way, in which case your battery is probably ok... if it keeps dropping below 80% regularly & somewhat quickly, you might have a bad backup battery.
