X3i active sync disconnects

Ok I am about at the end of my rope. I have an X3i connected to a sony vaio running XP pro and up until recently I have been able to sync with out a problem - oh yea I have active sync 3.7.1 - now however it will only connect for a few seconds then the connection is dropped. I have deleted the partnership on the desktop and deleted the p1 and p2 files in the registry on the axim, done a hard reset and reinstall my files from a sprite backup - which by the way is a great piece of software - afterwards I am able to sync a couple of times but shortly after ward it reverts back to not holding the connection. I would appreciate any help or work arounds.

Do you have a firewall installed on your computer? If so, disable, and try that.

Yes, I do have norton installed and I disabled it when I reinstalled active sync on the last hard reset and reinstall of active sync. I also tried disabling the firewall ever time I placed the axim in the cradle to sync and after a couple of successful times it started dropping the connection again forcing me to yet again do a hard reset and restore from backup.
