Strange SD card troubles
I purchased a SanDisk 256 MB SD card for my new Axim X3i a few days ago.

When I installed it, the unit told me it was 98% full. I removed it & put it back, and the PDA could never see the card again. So I returned it to the store.

I then bought a Kingston 256 MB SD card. Sometimes when I put it in, it can see the card and everything works fine. But sometimes it doesn't, and I have to toggle it, out and into the unit, until eventually it sees it.

I'm afraid to turn the unit off for fear that it won't see the card again.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? -p

It seems that there is an "issue" with the SD Controllers on some X3s. I can be hard to diagnose since Scamdisk cards are so unreliable too. Call Dell and have them ship a replacement. And stay away from Sandisk.

Out of interest, if you look on the back of the Kingston card, what is the serial number and country of manufacture?

I spoke with Dell technical support, who told me that the Axim X3i cannot read 256 MB or 512 MB SD cards due to a known issue, and that they are working on a patch to resolve it, and that in the meantime I should stick with 128 MB or less.

I never thought I'd say this, but 128 MB just isn't enough. Anyway, thought you all would like to know. -p

p.s. The Kingston card's particulars:

"SD-M256B1
0408 TJ2486H
Made in Japan"

I'd get a second opinion.

Ummmm..... My response to the Dell rep would have been "Ha Ha Ha WRONG!!"

I have two 256 cards (PNY) and both have worked perfectly and show the correct storage amount on the axim.

wow. at some point dell's tech support should make it into the guinness world records for most creative excuses.

card looks good, but with Kingston country doesn't seem to matter.

I think there is a 99% probabiity that the problem is mainly with the X3 and you should replace it. Keep the Kingston, don't bother with Sandisk--though they aren't a big problem in X3s normally--and get the Axim replaced. You got a bad SD slot, that's all. ask happycheesecake for more info.

My X3i reads both 256 MB and 512 MB the 256 is a Lexar and the 512 is a Kingston. My first X3i read the SD card for a bout a month then couldn't read it and had the Axim replaced. If I remember correctly there was a ROM fix that was supposed to fix the problem of Axims not reading SD cards.
