WIFi not working at home
Good morning,

I am a new user of the Axim X3i and I seem to have trouble with it in my own home. I try to connect to my wireless network and it shows the network name and states that it is connected. Howeveer, I cannot access the network nor surf the 'Net. When I go to a friends home who also has a wireless network with a Linksys router, it connects beautifully. My router is an Inexq wireless router. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried everything that I know but have had no success.

I can surf the net when the PPC is in its cradle. But wirelessly, doesn't work at home.

FWIW, my friend has a Linksys router at his office and I trie it there and again it worked fine. Could the problem be my router?

Let's try and debug this.

Thanks,

MEF38

Welcome to Aximsite!

Could be an issue with how you setup the router. It usually is human error, not equipment error. Especially since you can connect on other routers. Are you able to connect to your router with a PC? Try restoring your router to manufacturer settings and start from scratch. Pay close attention to every step in the manual for setting things up.

Do you use WEP? Check your WEP key to make sure you put it in right on your Axim.

Also, anything in the are of your house that would cause interference? Try using a different channel. Your router will default to 6. If there are other networks in your area it could cause some interference.

An most importantly, check out the wireless forum. You might find others who have had these problems and posted their solution.

Also be sure that if you have restricted the MAC addresses in your Router that you go back into the router and add your Ax. I forgot to do this when I got mine and couldn't figure out why I couldn't access the network for about two hours.

First thing I would do is log onto the router and disable WEP and MAC Filtering, but leave SSID Broadcast enabled. I'd also make sure your router is broadcasting a "Long Preamble" as some cards (like the Socket/Symbol) are not compatible with the short (at least according to the manual). Assuming the card works fine with this setup, I would reimplement these features individually. I am betting that most likely you have either accidently entered a typo in your WEP key or have MAC filtering enabled but forgot to clear the PPC address. Also if you haven't already, make sure your SSID is not set to the factory default. There are multiple reasons why you'd want to change it, but in this case what might be happening is your neighbor has the same SSID on the same channel (also a factory default of 6 which you ought to change) and you might be connecting to their network inadvertently. Also make sure you're within range and you may want to disable power saving on the wifi card at least for figuring out this problem.

This defnately sounds like MAC filtering... I think

Go to your router settings and add the Axim's MAC address to the allow list.

Well, I got it to work. First thing I did was reset the router to the factory defaults. Then, of course, as things would go, my notebook comuter no longer connected. However, the X3i connected with no problem. Then I went back and started to tweak the system. I was able connect the notebook, but then had to readdress the other systems on the network.

Now I have to add security. I am not great at this. In fact, I hired a computer guy to set up my home/office network and he has not been able to come back and set up my Axim. At least I'm saving the $100 per hour that he chaarges.

What would be the best next step? WEP or MAC addressing? I want to have some sort of security on this network. Where do I find the MAC address? Is this something that I invent or does the Axim X3i come with a predefined one?

Thanks Everyone!

You will have to configure your laptop further if you turn on WEP and MAC filtering of course. I suggest turning on both. You can find your MAC address on your X3i by right clicking on the wifi metter at the right bottom corner when it is on. Then tapping on WLAN status, then tap on more info. Should be in there For your laptop it is usually on the bottom side of the card.

Thank you so much for the info. I tried it and it now works! And, my techie guy called me to schedule a visit and I told him that I won't be needing his services after all. Whew! Just saved myself a couple of hundred dollars. (I'm in the wrong business!)

Thanks everyone!
