Thanks Sheepy. I have toggled power save on/off with no effect on the random nature of this connection problem. Today, it's connecting great. Tomorrow, it'l be a pain in the ass. Frustrating.
Newton> There is a power save mode for the Axim and a power save mode for the Axim's network interface. Did you disable power save mode for the network interface through the config tool?

I have looked into this a bit further. It seems that when my X3i is randomly not connecting, it's just not getting an IP from the router. I can see this in the Dell WLAN utility.
Now I am trying a new approach - I am keeping the wireless radio turned on all the time and just using the Power button. Each time I turn it on, I connect. Is this because it it persisting an IP address from the previous session?
Caveat: this could just be more random behavior, but all day now my Axim connects every time I turn it on with the radio function never disabled.
i've had the problem of not being able to obtain an IP address like that before, on a linksys access point... but many others report excellent compatibility... so I'm not sure...
I think you might be on to something though... instead of disabling and re-enabling, try (when it next fails) just hitting the "Renew IP" button once or twice - it should change to 0.0.0.0 then 10 seconds or so later give you an IP address...
My idea does not work. My X3i is now randomly not connecting. Renewing IP does not work. The X3i is searching around for which channel the router is on.
Mine would not work with MAC Address filtering enabled even when I had the address from the PDA entered in properly. Removing the filtering allowed me to connect fine.
Funny thing is, my Axim works perfectly on another router, with 128 WEP, no MAC, etc. I have an email in to Linksys, maybe they can suggest something else.
I have the WRT54G and recently upgraded the firmware to the latest release. I have a 802.11G Laptop and a X3i. When I upgraded the firmware I decided to playaround with channels. I haven't had one problem connecting to the router before this. I always had the router set on channel 6. I wanted to see if I could get better distance by switching to a different channel. I went through a few and found that channel 1 gave me a 10db increase. From the point on I had to try to re-connect to the router 2,3 times before the Axim would find the router. Also my laptop wouldn't connect the first few times either. So I switched back to Channel 6, and no problems since. So if you haven;t, just try every channel.

I am done. I am going to wait until Dell releases the next ROM update that actually works.
I tried changing channels, turning everything off/on, etc. I am tired of chasing this thing. My X3i sometimes connects first try, 5th try, or 10th try, but it eventually connects. Guess that'll be good enough for me.
Yeah, what Dell ROM are you haveing trouble with? The only ROM that gave me Wi-Fi problems with my X3i and my Linksys WRT54G was the origional A00 that came with the x3i. After going to the pulled A01 release and now to the recent May 24th A02 release, I haven't had any wi-fi problems. I also have MAC address filtering enabled, SSID broadcast disabled, and WEP 64-bit security on.
I have the latest firmware on the Linksys G router and A01 on the Axim as installed by Dell when I got my X3i a month ago.
I am not convinced that going through the hassle of updating to A02 will automagically fix this random connect issue. The reason I say this is because I can connect at my Son's school 100% of the time (with all due respect, I have not connected there dozens of times, so maybe I have just been on the positive side of this random behavior while I am there!). Gotta be a gremlin in the router.
But, as I say, I am done. For now. Unless there is some easy fix!
