1 GB SD Card always full?
Hi,

I just purchased a SanDisc 1 GB SD-Card. When filling it with my card reader on the PC (up to 500 MB), everything is right, but when I put it into my Axim, it says there are only 9 MB left. Funny, when putting it back into my card reader, the PC suddenly states the same.
Retried twice with the same result... my 256 MB card works fine as it should... who can help?

First off....are you sure it is a 1gb card? If it is, I would try emptying it, then reformat it if you have the ability, and then trying again.

Thanks, Rob,

but I have done that already. Same result. It definetly says "1.0 GB" (and the price was accordingly high). And the PC says so also (but just before having inserted it for the first time into my Axim).

Have you tried reformatting it yet? You can do this by putting it in the card reader, then right clicking on the designated drive for the card reader in My Computer, and then clicking Format.

Oh, no I've tried a second time to format it, windows says it can't. Now it's RAW and I see no way of making it usable at all. Maybe the card it faulty?

Try StorageTools for Pocket PC. It is shareware, but fully functional, and has a long trial period. Has a lot of useful functions for storage cards, and one of them is formatting. It is PPC software.

Good deal. You will find a lot of kind, helpful, and patient people here. As far as I'm concerned Aximsite is the best community on the internet.

... just for information: It only worked once, now it's bad again. Meanwhile I've done some research in the net and seen that it's a common problem with SanDisk cardas on Dell PPCs. I hope I can give it back and find some manufacturer whose cards work...

Check this out http://sdprob.aximsite.com/ it's a site hosted by Chris (our gracious Aximsite host!) that covers a great deal of SD card issues and the Axim.

Maybe there's a clue there?

Thanks,

but I gave back my card just an hour ago... without any problem, because the retailer knew of this problem and accepted my explanation.
The list is nice, but why doesn't it contain any 1 GB cards? I could have made a start, but...

There are two reasons.

First, the list is outdated, and hasn't been kept up. If you notice, the last "edit" for Axim was X3 models. The X30 has been available since June 2004, and that is about the same time as Happycheesecake's last post. I'm not sure when 1GB SD cards became available, but it looks like they were in the $300 range at the same time (June 2004), which is scary as they are in the $60-$70 range now. Add to this that Dell and Sandisk have both admitted the "old" issue, and there are some Sandisk cards that work, plus there are people who vigorously support Sandisk products on Aximsite.

Second, people tend not to provide essential data. I'm trying to collect information on 1 GB SD cards, and very few people are taking the time to actually run the tests. Happycheesecake was dependent on the feedback from other users, and I'd guess that the source of information died out. If you can't get current data, your research quickly becomes outdated.
