Crash!?!

I have had my X3I for about a year now. A few days back I started to get a message box that said "cannot execute misc.exe". I was able to close the box and continue so I didn't worry too much about it.

I did a soft reset to see if that would help. The result was completely confusing. Lots of message boxes and a completely inconsistent behavior (apps would fail first try, run with second). It stopped syncing (can not execute repllog followed by can not execute connmgr.exe).

The data was not too critical, so I did a hard reset.

Now it is even less functional. It gives "can not execute welcome.exe" and then takes forever to get past the wirelss notification screen. When it comes up NOTHING will run. Everything says "cannot execute". I have the normal menus and can control the speaker volume. But nothing else will run.

After several hard resets this behavior is consistant (at least).

Anyone ever see anything like this? (I have been on hold with Dell for DAYS).

Sounds like a virus but doubt it . Try reflashing your axim with A02 ROM.

I think that would be the solution, presuming that the ROM image includes the base set of Windows files.

The question I have about that is how it is done. If it requires REPLLOG or CONNMGR to be running on the Axim then I have a problem because those appear to be corrupted.

I have searched for instructions on doing a flash programing but have not found any that I can examine to make the determination of what state the Axiom must be in.

Can you guide me to any of that? I would appreciate it.

You get the file from dell download. You need to have a cradle or sync cable. Double click on the file and Active sync will take over. Follow all prompts and instructions on the screen. Do not try to use while flashing the rom or you will screw it up.

I have the download and tried it when the problem started. It fails.

The problem here is that ActiveSync can not communicate with the Axim because the program on the Axim (CONNMGR) is part of the corrupted set of files.

So, when the Axim is not communicating with ActiveSync, how can you re-flash the ROM?

I think you have a big problem. You need to find a backup of a clean rom for your Axim and search this site for the boot loader trick. i have never done it maybe someone else will chime in. you will need a SD card with the backup Rom on it. From what I understand you put the card in the sd slot while itis off and reboot it holding a combination of the axim keys and it will load the backup rom from the SD card. Do a search for the above mentioned.

Here is the link. I searched for it for you. I don't know if it works but give it a try.

Good Luck

Sounds like you could simply have a hardware issue with your RAM/ROM.

Sounds like bad ROM

Very rare, but it happens in all devices

I agree. If that's the case, then the bootloader trick has got to work.

That wouldn't clear his ROM though.

To me it sounds like you got a virus on your computer - yu download the file then execute it - the virus infects the executable and therefore your PDA.

can you download and install from a different computer! if so do that. And if this works re-install your system on your computer at the same time (after formatting the drive first - then update your antivirus software.

Ok,

The problem is as several of us suspected: Corrupted ROM image.

The bootloader looks to be the correct solution. I have managed to get the self diagnostics to run (3button trick) and the unit checks out 100%.

I will try to SD card image load when I get home tonight.

Couldn't Dell just tell me this? Its so simple and I've wasted HOURS on the phone with their people (who don't seem to know ANYTHING about the 3button trick).

BTW: Thanks to everyone. I appreciate the fact that it takes time to respond.
