I suggest that you do not throw it out! It is worth $50 to $90. One of the repair services mentioned in one of the tutorials will recycle it if you live in to usa.

Sorry Art,
Eventually after much shouting and screaming at Dell Customer Care, they did Care about my problem and replaced the PDA with a refurb X3i machine - so I had to send the old one back.
I'm also in Australia - so could have been a problem. Sorry about the time taken to check back.

Me Too!!!

I just joined this site because a DELL tech support employee referred me to it! I am going CRAZY - my pocket PC died on April 16! It has the same exact issues: memory error detected, locked up blue screen, etc. SAME THING! HELP HELP HELP! I have only a backup on an SD card to fall back on, I was not hot syncing. I am going nuts without my X3.....

same

I've got the same problem. Gotta get my hands on an SD card reader for my computer and I'll let you know if the ROM flashing works for me.

Why is everyone having this problem all of a sudden?

ROM flashing does not work :(

Hi Ozone,
I read through a ton of posts on this site and everyone who did the ROM flashing were unsuccessful. I didn't even try it because it sounded to me like everyone who ran into this problem ended up buying a new pocket pc. I am boycotting DELL!!! I can't believe they WILL not help with this. I mean, I know I am out of warranty, but to leave me high and dry like this when my whole life is governed by this stupid little computer..... Can you tell I am very upset that I'm living without it?

My solution was:
I went to ebay, bought a brand new Axim X3 Pocket PC for $130, with shipping $138. I was not happy about that, but oh well. I have not yet received it in the mail, but when I do, I am going to restore my backup from my SD card onto the new pocket pc. Then I'm going to hotsync the new pocket pc to my computer (which I neglected to do with my old one - I only did SD card backups, not hotsyncs, stupid stupid) and after I hotsync, I'll finally have access to my old info! My life will be back! Then I am going to turn around and sell that same "one time used" pocket pc on ebay again. Would you like to buy it when I am done with it? hee hee.

I already have a new palm pilot - a Tungsten PalmOne - that my work bought for me. If I cannot get the data from the pocket pc from my computer to my new Tungsten, then I will just sit there and enter it all myself. Or at least I will be able to SEE the info again if need it. NO MORE DELL PRODUCTS FOR ME!

Thanks for listening to my ranting and raving...
If I don't hear from you, GOOD LUCK!!!!

I've avoided the rom update on my X30H because it is working perfectly. I don't need the features mentioned in the update. If it ain't broke, why fix it.
I've often thought about just updating so I have the latest, but now that I read this thread...forget it!
Thanks for all the feedback.

Lucky you, you have a working/functioning Dell pocket pc. I'm so jealous.
You're right, avoid any ROM updates. And please do not forget to hotsync and do SD card backups, you will need backups of your backups of your backups.

Nope, I'm a neighbor to Jersey, in PA.

Enjoy your pocket pc,
Angela

I really don't understand what you did.

You had two problems:
1. Your X3 ROM was corrupted.
2. The only backup was made by windows mobile and stored on your SD card.

>>>Even when you copy the backup to your PC you can not access it?

This means that there is no way to restore the backup made with windows mobile on a desktop computer?

Is that correct?

So far so good!
But even if the above turns out to be true you wouldn't have to buy another X3 either because you could have reflashed the corrupted ROM with the "bootloader" trick and an image form an upgrade that you can download directly from DELL.
I did exact this by myself and my X3 returned from the dead, except bluetooth and WLAN.

Hi Moralelastix,

Yes, my ROM was corrupted and yes, my only back up was on my SD card. Yes, I was able to get the backup on my pc and could not access it.

I wish you had responded to my post one week ago because then I could have tried what you did. If they have this solution downloadable from Dell on their website, why didn't the multiple Dell reps I spoke to tell me about it? Once again, terrible Dell service.

I'm so happy to hear that you were able to bring your pocket pc back from the dead.
I received my brand new Axim3 yesterday in the mail (the one I bought from eBay) and my backup was restored within seconds. I'm the happiest gal on earth right now! Now for finding a way to get the data into my new palm pilot.... wish me luck. Once again, I will be selling this "one time used" Dell Axim3 after I've gotten my info off of it if anyone is interested :)

Smiling and ecstatic,
Angela

@ angelatref

Glad you finally found a workaround.
Of course the "bootloader" trick is unofficial :rolling:!
(Probably because of the MS efforts of binding the software strict to the hardware. Like it will come with beautiful MS "VISTA". Thanks to Bill!)

But are you sure that there is really no way, no tool to get access to the win mobile backup?

What about the the backup program that comes with XP professional or some MS tools?

Anyway since I use my PDAs mostly for reading and sometimes movies I didn't have any experience about that backup story. And for the future I will walk miles around that for sure:approve: .

You are right about the DELL service. Here in Europe they are from the technical side incompetend to say the least(for the records: I know it only for their PDA section).
The only positive thing that I can say about them is that they replaced my first X3 althoug I broke the LCD by myself.
My X51v was replaced too because of the Accu panel switch. They send a complete new one and so I became a newer revision an a new Accu. I just send the old things back.
This is the revenge for my X3 disaster(they didn't say a word about the necessity to make yourself a ROM backup althoug they provide the tools to do that.
This is like throwing your PC out of the window because your win installation is buggy and your installation CD/DVD is broken!:rolling:
In fact when your Axim model gets an upgrade ROM from DELL you can use the image in there as a backup ROM and load it with the boodloader. But when there is no upgrade for your model type from DELL you can only peeve strangers in forums......or buy a new one.

Just unbelievable that crap like that finds its way to the marked.
....probably there are too many products or services offered today that have a broken link in the chain of responsibility.....

One last question:
What exact types of the Axim PDAs do you have now?
X3 ,X3i or X30 do they have bluetooth and WLAN?
Do you sell both Axims?

Thanks!

I just found this site because I became a victim of Dells blue screen of death and when I called tech support I was told that there was nothing to do except buy another Axim. I wonder if they get commissions. So I googled and found this fourm. Now can someone tell me where I can get a copy of the Boot ROM?

Thank you

You have to look at the Dell site for the appropriate ROM Upgrade package for your type of X3(you are also free to choose your favourite language:) ).
When you get the right one(Rxxxxxx.exe) unpack it with WINRAR and put the "P16R_xxxxx.img" file on a SD(FAT 32) card.
Stuck the SD card in your AXIM and use the "bootloader" trick(four buttons).

>When you can not find the appropriate ROM at the DELL site you have a problem which is not your fault! <

I am having a similar problem, mine is stuck on align screen, any subjections, I just bought from eBay and not under warranty. All though this unit looks new. No scratches or what ever. I emailed previous owner because it didn't come with any thing, he sold as a x30 and when I got it has a label x3. He said he got it as a replacement and they told him it was a x3i any subjections how to get it unstuck? Thanks grm
