if you do it without the sd card in do you get the diagnostic screen? I tried it a couple times and it didn't work, but then I realized that I was doing it slightly wrong. First of all, be absolutely certain that you have the correct rom image on the sd card and that it is the only one. If you don't you run the risk of causing irreparable damage (remember: I'm not responsible for any damages, I'm just telling you what I did)
the trick is:
1. hold down all 4 buttons (reset, on/off, scroll enter, and contacts)
2. count to 5
3. let go of the on/off button and the reset button and keep holding on to the scroll enter and the contacts.
the device will make a wierd beep then the screen will turn white and text will show up while it is booting. When I didn't put in the sd card, it asked me to press a button to either do the diagnostic or another button to skip it. I tried out the buttons without the sd card several times before doing the actual rom replacement and did the diagnostic just to make sure that I had the buttons down.
When I put in the sd card and did the magic combo, the device detected it and started to read the image. It took a few minutes to read the image then delete the existing rom and boot up. I was sure to leave it alone during this time until it started up. Then all was good.
