Palm to Dell???
Hi, my friend saved all his contacts and addresses on his PC using the Palm Data icon (not microsoft outlook or outlook express).

He now got a Dell x3 and I don't know how to help him get all these contacts and addresses from the Palm into the Dell. We now have Micro Outlook installed and activesync, but we are lost. Can someone give me some advice? We would be most grateful. Thanks in advance

2 ways...

either do a palm hotsync with outlook as your pim, then have hotsync set to 'palm overwrites desktop'. this way, your palm data will now sync to outlook.

Or the other route is to do an 'export' from w/in palm desktop (click, FILE -> EXPORT), save this export to a file you can find. then go over to outlook, and perform an 'import', (pointing to the export file above). wa-la
this is the way i did it 2 weeks aago when i ditched my palm for a x50v!

he failed
hi. my friend failed. i want him to try the second option. when he goes to his Palm file to export he has several files (contacts, addresses, etc). does he export one file at a time, giving it a name and send it to desktop so he can easily find it when importing it to outlook? he got very frustrated and confused, and i live 100 miles from him. maybe you can give us a step by step for idiots when you get time. sorry to bother you; hope you can help. thanks

Hey,

I'm facing the same Palm-Outlook export-import task, but when I want to export the calendar data from the Palm Desktop the only file format it offers is ".dba" and I could not find the relevant Outlook import option. (Outlook offers tons of possible import formats, but this one I have not found yet.)

Is there any step I'm missing?

Thanks in advance.

Palm Desktop - Outlook sync (short term solution)
I found a short term solution and only good for you if you want the two programs (Palm Desktop and Outool) syncronize once or multiple times in a very short period (few days) - as I did.

There is a program called Double Look:
http://www.companionlink.com/dl4pd.htm

For a few days you can use it for free with full functionality and only have to buy after the trial period has finnished. But you only need that if you continuously want the two programs to be in sync with each other.

For my needs: a one time save export from Palm Desktop to Outlook (what seems to be a non-trivial taks) it work miracles! And free. Hope that help others too

I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that you shouldn't have to "export" from the Palm to get it into Outlook. Palm provides some optional software to automatically sync Palm Desktop data with Outlook whenever you do a Palm sync. Details are here:
http://www.palmone.com/us/support/outlooksupport.html

If you're trying to move data from Palm to Axim, that's the best & cheapest approach; i.e. use the Palm-provided software to sync from Palm to Outlook, then use the Axim-provided software sync from Outlook to Axim.

Note that this method wouldn't work would be if your Palm handheld is broken. That was my situation when I had to do this last month. I ended up buying a product from Chapura called "PocketCopy" which solved my problem. It copies directly from the Palm Desktop software into Outlook. Here's a link to it:
http://www.chapura.com/pocketcopy.php

EDIT: Cool, I didn't know about Double Look. That might have saved me a few bucks -- oh well.

Actually you are very right. BUT one of my problems was, that the original install CD for my old Palm was nowhere near (i.e. thousands of miles away) when I needed it... And the download versions do not include these... and I was absolutely not wanted to pay for something I ought to be able to do for free (actually as Palm says it too, the price of the Outlook link program you linked above is INCLUDED in the price you pay for your Palm, so I DID pay for it once, but it was just very much out of my reach at that moment).

I tried to request a replacement CD from Palm, but they sent me to resellers and this is when I had enough of searching for a CD and I knew there must be a software that does the trick I need. And that's how I found the above mentioned application.

I know that my situation has been unique in many ways, but if someone else steps into the same shoes at lease they have a hint where to start...

Yes, the easiest way to move from Palm Desktop to Outlook is reinstall the palm software and select Outlook as your main conduit for your PIM. Then go to the conduit and select Palm overwrites desktop then ...hotsync your palm. This is the route I took and it worked like a charm.

But I should say first ... make a backup of your Palm address book, memo & calendar. Go to Palm desktop, select export, and save the file as an "archive". Save to a folder you can find later if needed.

If your unable to do a re-install (no palm software), you do have the option to export the data.

In PalmDesktop, select FILE -> EXPORT. In the export window, click the drop down menu labeled 'Export Type', there should be an option for Comma Seperated (*.csv) file type. Save the file with this extension.

Then go into Outlook and do a FILE->IMPORT, and peruse to where you saved that .csv file. During the import you'll have to mach up the fields which is a pain, if it doesn't work right the first time, just delete that Outlook contacts option and try again.

You'll need to do this for each module in Palm Desktop (ie .. AddressBook, Memo, Calendar).

Hope that helps...

My initial problem was that my Palm Desktop (v4.1.4) does NOT allow calendar export to *.csv, just *dba.
What Desktop version do you use? Yours might be a newer version?

Sorry, I didn't go thru ALL the Palm Desktop modules. Your right, the calendar does not have an export to *.csv option (I have version 4.1 as well).

I use Lotus Notes for my email & calendar and sync with it, but I also used Palm Desktop for my Address book and Memo's. The Palm AddressBook and Memo pad apps DO have the export to *.csv option, of which I've used successfully.

But the best option is still to re-install Palm Desktop and change the conduit to use Outlook as your PIM.
