Worried Updated ROM, can't restore data?

Hi all,

Hope this is the right forum to ask about this. I thought I'd update my PDA's operating system (from A05 to A06). It's a Dell Axim X30 and here's the page with the update info: http://tinyurl.com/ctlap

I backed everything up. I did a regular sync with ActiveSync and a full backup, and I made a ROM backup/drive image. Then I ran the upgrade file.

Everything went fine, until I came to restore my data. ActiveSync wouldn't let me. Instead it says that the backup file was created with a different type of mobile device. So it appears that I can't restore my data. I could restore the drive image, but I don't really want to do that. Can anyone help me, please?! :)

Well your'e in a pickle. What you technically need to do is hard reset your Axim, then Activesync as GUEST. Then you will have the option to apply your backup file to the Axim. Unfortunately, you will most surely have issues applying an A05 backup to your A06 ROM. It has been recommended to backup/restore PIM data only and then reinstall individual programs manually.

Well I tried reinstalling the ROM image, but ActiveSync still refused to restore the data because it was made by a "different device". I am using ActiveSync as GUEST by the way, since the update removed all the Partnership info.

Someone else suggested that I try changing the ower info and making sure all my settings were the same etc, and perhaps that will trick ActiveSync into behaving.

Otherwise I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and reinstall everything *groans* Oh well, you live and learn.

By the way, when you talk about PIM data, do you just mean all the stuff that's in Outlook, or is there a way to recover all my settings etc without restoring from ActiveSync?

Well I followed the suggestion of changing the User Information back to my name and details, and putting all the global settings (time zone, currency, etc) back the way they were and trying it then. Thankfully it all restored properly. :approve:

So I think I might actually be able to do that even if I updated the ROM again, but I've decided to take an: "it's not broken, don't bugger about with it" attitude for now ;)

While I'm here though, if anyone does have any hints/tips for updating the ROM, I'd be grateful. I might try again at some point!

You cannot restore ROM A05 backed-up data after A06 has been installed. Dell Engineers failed to incorporate a fix.
