You can add a 4gig flash card to let you store data, and camera images as well as mp3 videos etc....

I'd say it's probably because they don't actually make the Axims themselves. They have them made overseas with their branding slapped on. To offer more memory as an option, they'd either have to stock versions with two different levels of internal memory, or order the higher-capacity models from the manufacturer each time a customer wants some.

To do it the first way (stocking 2 versions), they'd actually need to do some accurate forecast modelling or they're likely to end up with tons of them sitting in storage that could otherwise be used for products that move.

To do it the second way, it would take quite a while to get the items from their manufacturer, and probably at a higher price.

This isn't really a problem for their desktop or laptop PCs since they buy the components from various suppliers and Dell assembles them at their own facilities. This makes it relatively easy to customize.

Help my memory

I've had my X30 for a year now; I've got a 256MB SD card which I thought would give me all the memory I needed. However, if I try to use any apps now it always tells me to close it down as the memory is too low.

Seems as if the RAM isn't big enough to cope. In other words all I can use reliably is the calendar!

I don't even use Outlook with ActiveSync. I cannot even delete all the useless items in ROM memory that I don't use. I obviously misunderstood the amount of usable memory that Dell claims (measly 32MB).

Any suggestions other than saving up for a PDA with more ROM?

The problem is probably where you installed your programs and/or stored documents. The general consensus is that you should install all the programs that you can in the Built-In Storage or on storage cards. The same thing for documents. Doing this will leave your main RAM mostly intact for the Axim to use on the fly as needed.

When you install a program and it asks you if you want to install it to the default location, click NO and then choose "Built In Storage" or "SD Card" from the dropdown menu you're given.

Mad Back to square 1?

Most of the apps I installed (I've got Spb PocketPlus/Diary/Folder/Weather/Time/Freecell; e-Sword Bible app; ) all said that they should be installed to the main memory, not the card. I've removed A-Z Maps/Wake-up Tweak, among others, to free-up space. I even bought Windspring compression software.

Would it be possible/successful to uninstall the lot and re-install on the SD card?

I need to do something, because I can't see photos or listen to music w/o probs. Yet a PDA seems the answer to my specific requirements.

The ONLY software I have installed to Main Memory for this current setup I've got going now is the sync portion of Cash Organizer, and I've got 42 applications installed at the moment. I haven't used any of the Spb products, but I can't imagine them having trouble with storage cards.

There's a thread called "Memory Help for Noobies" that should help you figure out if a particular piece of software can be stored to storage cards. You can find it HERE.

After this help from the forum I have re-installed Spb PocketPlus and Spb Diary to Main Memory (it wouldn't allow installing in Storage Card); Spb Weather /Time /Folder /Freecell and Pocket e-Sword /MS SQLCE 2.0 and WindSpring Mobile to the card. This gives a result in Main Memory of 4.26MB free in storage and 7.86MB free in Program, and 5.38MB free in Storage Card.

How does this result seem? It is certainly working, but there's nor room for pictures /music or Bible modules over and above the basic Bible.

So my next questions:
where in UK would I get the best buy for a larger SD card?
what make is most reliable?

Thats how they make everything =\ thats why some products look so similar.

They go to a manufacture, choose a product, maybe make a few changes, and done =\

I'm looking at this and wondering exactly what is taking up so much room on the SD card. To only have 5.38MB free on the card, you would have to have ~250MB of data on it. I can't imagine the few items you have listed on the storage card taking up that much room.

Also, which version of the x30 do you have? The top-of-the-line and midrange X30s have 64MB of RAM. The low-end model has 32MB of RAM. Knowing how much total RAM you have will help us figure out if what you have left after installing all that stuff seems reasonable or not.

Hmm Memory probs

It's the X30 with RAM 32MB and ROM 32MB (version A05) memory.
Windows Mobile 2003SE version 4.21.1088 (Build 14260.2.0.2)
Processor Intel (R) PXA270 speed 312MHz

Using Find larger than 64KB brings up: a list of not-very big files. THEN investigating further I found that when I deleted all the files on the SD card at re-installation, they hadn't all gone. The large memory use is from music files! Ta-da! I now have 19.77MB in use and 224.11MB free. How does this seem now?

And while I'm on the subject of WMPlayer:
why does it keep putting back samples etc as fast as I delete them?
When is it syncing on the quiet to do this?
How can I stop it?

The advice to boss my Axim into submisssion over the Spb PocketPlus and Diary I can't fulfil, because a message comes up saying that it will not let me! It's not just a case of choosing where to put it, it just halts unless I choose Main Memory.

You may want to see if you have any music files in your sync folder in your desktop My Documents folder. Sometimes that causes it to resync.

Considering you've got the smaller-RAM version of the x30, you're probably in as good a shape as you can be given what you're installing and where it's making you install.

There ARE ways around it making you install to Main Memory (using a program called CabInstl), but for the time being I'd probably leave them where they are and see how things work. If it still isn't working for you, let us know and we can try to walk you through moving them.

Momgenie,

I used Pocket Plus and had no problems running it from the Built in Storage. Ran a wee bit slower but no problems. Have you tried that?
