X30h BT GPS connection problems

Any help would be most appreciated. I have a X30h and I bought a BT GPS receiver last week. I am having some problems getting the receiver to work with my system and I am hoping someone here can help me troubleshoot why this is happening.

I am running TomTom mapping software, version 5.0. I found the GPS receiver successfully with the PDA and created the SPP slave serial connection. I paired the devices successfully. The serial port settings are inbound on COM 8 and outbound on COM 7. Under the Active Connections tab, the BT GPS SPP Slave is showing 5 green bars under outgoing connections.

I am having two, possibly related, problems right now. The BT GPS connection is only persistent for 2-3 minutes. It seems to just drop off the connection after a period of being idle. This particularly seems to be a problem when I go into TomTom to attempt to see the GPS receiver. I have changed the settings in TomTom to reflect the receiver on COM 7 and it still reports “No GPS device!”. I have tried changing the settings to COM 8 instead. I have tried the receiver inside and outside since I have read that the GPS receiver may not be detected by TomTom if it cannot see any satellites.

The BT GPS reciever I bought is from Inter-active Information and I have contacted them as well with this issue. I am just concerned that they may come back with something along the lines of "Not a GPS hardware problem, sorry". The user guide for the GPS tells a little bit about the signal lights on the reciever: The LED-2 – blue light for BT connectivity is flashing ~1/sec when I go into TomTom signaling good connection. Then around 2 minutes, it will start flashing every ~ 3 seconds signalling lost BT connection. When I go to check BT Settings, sure enough, the connection is not active. This also happens if I just initialize the connection and do not start TomTom. The LED-1 light is first solid red indicating that the reciever is active for GPS tracking. Outside, I once had LED-1 light go from solid red to blinking red about ~1/sec. Does this mean satellite lock? I couldn’t find any information on that signal in the user guide. In any case, it was still not seen by the PDA.

Any advice based on this information?

Your help would be most appreciated.

Update! Ok, I got a message back from the vendor I purchased the BT receiver from. They were pretty helpful. Apparently, TomTom has a glitch where it wants you to put in the BT receiver as 'Other NMEA wired GPS' instead of 'Other BT GPS'. As soon as I did that, set the baud rate to 9600, and the COM to 7, the program started working just fine and the BT stayed connected.

I was probably encountering an auto-off feature with either the receiver or the Axim that was severing the BT connection after a certain period without communication.

I'm posting this here in the helping someone else who encounters the same problem.

Hi,
How did you change the name? I am having the same problem, but I am not clear on how to change it to Other NMEA wired GPS
