HI, i keep my axim x30 in a leather wallet always in my front pocket. ive had it for at least a year i think. today, when i took out my wallet from my pocket, opened it up and pressed the power button, the strangest thing popped up on the screen. its almost impossible to describe so i drew a pretty bad version of it in MS PAINT, and attached it here.
basically, its black on the right side, with a ton of color bars running down thru the black... (i only drew a few to give u an idea, but they are alot thinner, run straight down unlike my sloppy drawing, and there are many more).
i have reset the device with the button on the back of the device, and that did not help any.
is there a fix?
is it worth repairing? or is this kind of problem as expensive to fix (outside of warranty) as almost buying a new one?
if its garbage now, is there anyway to save the data? i did back up the info two days ago, but there were so many important things i put in since them that i am dying to recover.
whether or not i cant fix this and cant recover the new data, is there at least a way to retrieve the data that is inside the backup file without buying a new ppc right away? like, using just my pc?
Well, why don't you try hotsyncing it? It looks like it's just the screen that's bad so it might backup your new data just fine. The hotsync manager on the pc will tell you.
Now about the screen, I don't know for sure but it looks like it might be a lose ribbon cable. If you're confortable taking it apart try re-seating all the cables, of course, you should do everything to try and get your data backed up first since it's likely you'll lose it by having the battery out for so long.

1. where can i find instructions for taking this bad boy apart an reseating all the cables?
2. assuming that does not help, is it worth repairing, or is this kind of problem as expensive to fix (outside of warranty) as almost buying a new one?
3. assuming its too expensive to fix, do u recommend i get another x30High or the new x51v? (assuming price isnt too much of a concern). i really like the fact that with the new x51v, u dont have to worry about losing data just bc of a dead battery. but if there are reasons not to get it, please let me know!
4. sorry for adding this question in an axim forum, but i need to make a fast decision... does anyone know if smartphones have the same functionality as the axims? in other words, can i put on pocketbreeze and download my favorite chess game? basically, i want to know if smartphones are the same thing as ppcs but with phone capabilities as well. right now, i have verizon so i would have to upgrade my own phone if i took that route. i think they are only offering the palm treo 700w in my area... any advice on that specific issue?

1. I don't know, i'm sort of looking for myself since I might be swapping my X3i and X30 screens. I'm sure they're out there somewhare.
2. You have a few options. Dell or third party repair places will probably charge well over $100, probably $150-$200. I just bought an V30H in very good condition from ebay for less than $200, but you could also get a low-end X30 or X3 for under $100 and use the screen (replace it yourself) It shouldb't be a big problem (I hope).
3. I don't know much about the X51V, but if money isn't an issue new toys are always nice. Although I like the styling of the 30 series much better.
4. I'm sure there's some smartphones running a version of WM2003 (same as X30) but the newer ones are running WN2005 I thinki which may have some conpatibility problems with old apps, I really don't know for sure, just some things i've read here and there.
If datas still there, you can get through active sync. So before you do anything I would turnit on and connect it to your pc and check activesync. If it connects use active sync to get your data
I have replaced my own screen already, and can give you complete directions as well as some things to watch out for if you are interested. Just send me a message.
Nathan
P.S. I will try to find the site that gives a video of how to do this, but its been a while... Also, to replace the screen, you will want to replace not only the screen, but also the digitizer, and your looking at $160 or so the last time I checked... but I will check again...
Looking at the pic, you do have to replace your screen. You can get a new screen from third party suppliers for around 160, but its still a lot, your best bet is (if money is an issue) use ebay and find an x30 low and pull the screen. The only problem with that is your looking at possibly have scratches and stuff.
I have replaced my screen, ( I think I already said this) and can do it with my eyes closed now..haha.. I had a few problems with it before.. so send me a message and I can tell you how and what to look out for. MOST IMPORTANTLY, BACK UP YOUR DATA ON YOUR PC!!!!!
From what I have heard you are better off with the x30H. There seems to be a lot of bugs that need to be worked out of WM5. So unless you absolutely need a vga screen x30H is the way to go IMO.
I have the same vertical lines since my ppc was dropped onto a stone floor... Can I use an X3 screen to replace my broken X30 screen? Are they identical?
Tell me yes!
I believe the hardware and connector wise they are the same. But I remember reading (I think it was under the review section here on aximsite) that one of the screens was better than the other. Currently can't remember exactly which is better than which, help?
