Yep, that's how to do it.

I don't know much about the backup battery though; just that it's rechargable under normal circumstances and isn't a CR2032 battery that would need to be replaced.

Here's a link to a thread about how to remove/replace the backup battery. (I wouldn't really recommend it though if you're not electronically inclined.) However, I don't know if that is even related to the problem. Go with the hard reset and then let us know if that solved the problem.
