I have a 2 year + old axim X30. It has never given me troubles. two days ago I was carrying it in my holster and it beeped at me that the battery was low (the holster had pushed the power button on). I tuned it off and plugged it into my travel cable to charge it. That night I turned it on and got a strange pattern on the screen: vertical lines running up and down the length of the screen. The lines gradiate from light to dark and are mostly grey scale. There is also an image that just about looks like a feather or some sort of flourish across the middle of the screen. this flourish also goes from bottom to top. It appears that the flourish has left some permanent mark on the screen as a ghost of it is visible after turning the PDA off.
I have tried the soft reset and hard rest. I've tried hard reset connected to the power cable only, and tried it with only the battery; and I tried it connected to both. these actions have changed nothing except minor changes to the pattern itself.
Does anyone have any idea what has happened or what I can do from here?

Thanks for the condolences (and the optimism, diducmeb4). Upon closer evaluation, it certainly is a cracked screen.
Next question: Are my X30 accessories (sync cables and batteries) compatible with the Axim X5 line (X5, X50 and X51)? If so, I intend to check eBay for a unit-only sale.
As far as I know the x5 is a totally different beast. The same case and connectors are used on the x3, x3i and x30 lines. Other than that you're out of luck. Do check out the classifieds here on aximsite though. Might just have what you're looking for. Classifieds
