My axim X30 connects fine but I receive an error saying synchronization cannot be started because it was not able to log on to the network. Is at this point that any attempt at sychronization stops.

I have the latest McAfee installed and use XP Pro. How can I correct this?

Welcome zanzibarbob7 - Did you click on the "help" on the activesync which will take you to Microsofts web page with some troubleshooting tips? They may help you. If they don't and no one more knowledgeable gets back to you click on the Activesync thread and you'll learn a whole lot. This is a very educational site. Good Luck!
