X30 doesn't work with Dlink DI-514 wireless router
i got my X30 last week & have been trying to get it to connect to the internet w/ my Dlink DI-514 router. it barely ever works (1 time out of 20 i can download a webpage) i have set up 2 wireless laptops & 1 desktop to use with the router & they work flawlessly. i also have a netgear 814 wireless router which the X30 connects to & works w/ no problems. my laptops can connect to either router automatically when it loses its connection to the other so they are both set up identically. so it's not a settings issue with the router, encryption, ip, etc.
My laptop and desktop connect to the router with no problem, but the axim won't do it. It will sniff the network and get connected and assigned an IP address, but it can't surf the internet or ping any other computers on the network. I have a friend who also got an x30 that won't connect. Dell is obviously unaware of this problem, as I spent 3 hours with tech support the other day trying to resolve the issue. They were going to send me a new handheld but I told them not to, because I didn't think that would solve the issue. I have been on 3 other wireless networks since then with no problem. There is definitely an issue with the axim and the DLINK 514.
another user here told me he did a firmware upgrade for a rev A DI-514 & that solved his problems. i have a rev C and the latest firmware is the same as the firmware in my router... i suppose i could try to "upgrade" it to what's on the web...
I have the same router, I spend like 3 hours clicking and trying to figure out what the prob is, after I finally gave up and setup my desktop as a peer to peer connection for the PDA.
When I get home, I will check to see if i have the DI-514 Revision A and B or the DI-514 Revision C to upgrade the firmware.
Hopefully I can update it and it will fix the problem, I will post my findings tonight.
I had it on channel 10, so I will try 11 too.

is your router rev A, B or C? can you verify that you have wireless power management disabled? mine always stays on - when i click 'off' & open that window up again, it still says 'on'
With no success on this network. It does improve performance on other networks I have noticed. I have the revision B of the 514 with the latest firmware. I finally gave up today and got a new linksys router. The axim worked like a charm on it.
using the utility to disable power management i got the router working with my x30. the connection seems slower with the dlink than with my netgear router but at least it works. thanks to all for your help!
Updated firmware, used channel 11, and nothing, well it does say that it is connected to the router but nothing works, I then switched to the peer to peer connection using a Syntax USB-400 WiFi which is free at Ecost . It now works 100% and just as far as with a Wireless Router and best of all it is FREE.
In the future however I will try different routers.
I just bought a new (refurb) Dlink 514 (revision C) for $24CDN (thats about 50 cents US ) from tigerdirect.ca.
I got it tonight, plugged it in, entered my DSL settings and was surfing on my X30 high in about 5 minutes. I then felt brave and entered a 128 bit WEP key and turned that on and it still worked.
I then changed a couple of firewall settings and locked it down some more but everything works like a charm with the Axim and my home network (which is behind a 2nd firewall...I don't trust WIFI that much).
The only thing that I did ahead of time was ensure that power management was turned off on the X30 wireless. I am able to toggle this on and off by selecting the setting then cycling the wireless enable/disable via the hard button.
This forum is great for giving great info like that. I hope that this helps someone. I almost passed on this great deal because it seemed that the DLink was not compatible with the X30 but as you can see it works fine for me and a few others who have posted.
