What routers do your recommend?
I am having problems with my D-link Dl-614+ wireless router. I'm in the process of searching for a new wireless router, preferably with a built in print server. I was wondering what you all recommend works well not only with the X30, but as an overall wireless router.

As of now, I'm looking at Linksys and Netgear. However, the Linksys G wireless router doesn't have a print server. Only their A/B server does. I'm not sure, but I think I remember seeing a G wireless router with a printserver function from Netgear. Or perhaps some of you out there have the DI-714P+ from d-link. I was wondering if the X30 has problems with it as it did with the 514.

Thanks for any advice,

I have the DLink 614+ rev B and since the 3.41B5 firmware that came out this month, it has been great. The download link on the US site is the same as 3.41B4 so use this link for the newer one. http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/info.nsf/0/9...56ea900135d1e/$FILE/Di-614_cx_v3.41_b0005_nml.bin

If you have the rev A, use this link for the 2.32 firmware...
http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/info.nsf/2ec...56ea900121efb/$FILE/D-link_614plus_TI_V2.32_nml.bin

If you use these already, maybe you do need a new router. Also make sure that 4x mode is off.

Wow, didn't know that stuff
This may be a dumb question, but how do you know which version of the firmware you have. I'd like to try the firmware update since I won't be able to buy a new router for at least a month.

Thanks,

Click on Advanced on the top menu and then click on Performance (once it appears) on the left. The option should be towards the bottom. Hope all goes well for you... if you need anymore help setting up let me know!

alright!
Thanks effortless,

I was able to disable the 4X option. I was wondering...what does disabling 4X actually do?

The 4x mode enables a kind of compression that is only compatible with other 4x mode enabled lan devices. The Airplus series from D-Link are an example. There is a TI chip in these devices which enables a 22Mbps mode. The Axim does not contain this "enhanced" acx 100 chip in it and is only capable of a 11mbps transfer. If 4x is enabled and there are lan cards that aren't able to decrypt the extra compression that is being used to "speed" up the connection, then they will have problems connecting to the router. Although in some cases they seem to connect fine, they will decrease the speed of the entire network. I hope this explains it a bit better. If this has helped you connect better, please let everyone know.

a difference
Sorry about the late post. I changed and turned 4X off. My wifi worked better. Not a whole lot but enough to notice a faster connection. Also, after updating the firmware my whole network worked a whole lot better. Thanks a lot effortless!

Eventually, I do plan to get another router with a print server in it. However, D-link will be back on the list.

Thanks again,

Dlink and Netgear are IMO junk. As an IT professional, we use Linksys religiously. We have never had a connection or setup problem. Most of our custmers are adding wireless to their networks in addition to hardwire. Of the customers we have that are now wireless, we have had nothing but positive comments.

Unless you really want a router with a print server, it is not necessary. All you have to do is share it from your system and call it done. If you are going to get a new router, whether it be hardwired, hard/wireless - I strongly recommend Linksys.

Why are D-Link and NetGear Junk, because you don't like them, and don't use them? The fact that you're an IT Pro and use Linksys doesn't make NG and DL "junk".

I've heard alot of configuration problems and complaints about Linksys, but I don't tell people they're junk. I run all D-Link products on my home network, but I don't go around saying the the others are junk, I suggest that they make the decision for themselves. I've not had any issues with my D-Link equipment and would reccomend the brand any day.

Please let me know the model number of Belkin router you are using and I will send you some settings. Also, are you using encryption and/or MAC filtering?

Well, thats why I said IMO (in my opinion). I didn't state for fact that they are junk.

All the D-link's, Netgear's, Belkin's and other "cheaper" brands have all had numerous problems in setup, install, quality and connection. I have ripped out D-link wireless networks that were just barely working and put Linksys in their place. To everyone's enjoyment, the Linsys network was 100x's better connecting at full throughput, where the D-link didn't even come close.

I have no problem with people deciding for themselves what they like best. However, take it with a grain of salt. I just don't like to hear people complaining about how their network or pheripherals don't work because they bought cheap and poor hardware. Wasted money.

Anyways, do what works for you. As stated earlier - this is MY OPINION. Not fact.

That's cool, you've backed up your claim. But again, you're saying that the others are "Cheap and poor hardware". I disagree, but you've said why through your experience. I've seen a couple of folks return Linksys products because they were so fed up with them not working or being unreliable.

Anyhow, I apologize if I came off harsh, and everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I guess I've just had different experiences.
