I am soon to be a proud new owner of an X30 624 MHz, and seen the deal going on with SanDisk cards right now. I have ordered 2 512 meg cards and then I start seeing some posts about an issue with SanDisk cards and the Axim's not getting along. Most of the stuff I see has been inconclusive and didn't offer any solid answers on who is to blame for the issues, or even what to really do should I have issues. Can someone fill me in?
Ryan, let me be bold to say: don't listen to them. SanDisk is one of the three partners in the SD manufacturing--Panasonic and Toshiba are the others. All the cards on the market that don't bear those names actually come from one (or more) of those companies--they just get rebranded.
SanDisk gets a terrible rep in here but I'll tell you what, I've owned many SanDisk SD cards ranging from 16MB all the way to 256MB...each one has worked fine--I'm talking no problems whatsoever. I've used these cards in 6 devices...2 pocket pc's (Toshiba e330 and now my current Dell x30); 2 laptops (Toshiba 2435-s255 and now my current Dell Inspiron 300m -both had SD card readers built in) and 2 cameras (Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC33 and now my current Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC40. Not one iota of a problem with any of these devices.
I am still to this day trying to figure out why everybody complains about the SanDisk SD cards. Interestingly enough, you'll ready plenty of posts that talk about "my Dell Axim X30 stopped reading my SD card" ...did we ever think to blame the Dell for the SD card problem (if there really was one) or how bout the Windows software? No, we blame the disk...go figure.
All that to say, enjoy what I'm sure will be 2 trouble free 512 SanDisk SD cards. I'm looking for a good deal to upgrade to two of those myself (or maybe even the 1GB) ...taking 4megapixel pictures on the TIFF setting doesn't fare well for a 256 card--you need 512 or a 1GB. Not to mention ripping CD's at 320kbs mp3 quality.
Enjoy!

ps: I've also used a Simpletech 128MB SD card at one point--it was great too...probably rebranded SanDisk though which would get me in trouble here
I too have ordered a SD 512MB card. I ordered the Ultra II variety.
I hope to soon be an X30H/X50H owner, so I purchased the card in preparation for that event. (Hopefully the X50 will come out sooner than later :) )
Either way I am not too terribly concerned as the Ultra's have a lifetime warranty. Granted there is the hassle of the exchange ... hopefully that will never happen. I beleive the normal ones have a 5 year warranty which is still good in my opinion.
I've got a total of five SanDisk cards - 2 SD cards and 3 CF cards - that I've accumulated in the past year and a half or so. I have had problems with 2 CF cards and 1 SD card. Sandisk customer service was great and did a prompt exchange but man, that was a lot of data/books/music and software to reinstall.
In the past 8 months I've picked up a Kinston SD card, a PQI SD card and a PNY SD card. I've not had any problems with any of them.
Thanks for the heads up - also, if anyone is looking for deals on SD cards, hard drives, basically anything electronic - keep an eye on www.slickdeals.net. Matter of fact, there are some deals up there right now on SanDisk cards - that's where I found mine.
