This morning, my Axim x30 would not connect to the internet. I turned to axim site (and
http://wifi.aximsite.com/sync.html) for help. I spent 3+ hours working on this, and ultimately did Dell's "technical support through chat" when nothing worked.
Final "solution" is that Dell is sending me a replacement Axim x30. I thought I would post what happened in case it helps anyone here.
I got the Axim in Nov 2004 and the wifi/internet worked fine straight out of the box. Never had to do anything to connect to home wifi or any cafe or airport wifi. I also never installed any software on it except the bluetooth executive keyboard driver and Agile Messenger, both of which worked great.
Last week I got excited when my roommate installed some programs on her Axim x30. She installed PocketBreeze, Pocket Informant, and a few others I don't know. So I installed Pocket Informant. Then I also grabbed SOTI pocket controller, and sbp pocketplus.
I did not need to use wifi for a while, so I don't know when it broke. But this morning, no wifi. Pocket IE gave "no wireless card detected" errors for every website.
Dell WLAN Utility *and* Odyssey Client both showed strong/excellent connection with my linksys router. But the IP address was bogus, a 169.etc. Things I tried:
- setting a static IP, DNS servers
- turned off Bluetooth
- uninstalled programs 1 at a time, with soft resets and attempted internet connection between each one
- the odyssey client gave me the icon of the tower with the halo and arrows, but IE said no wireless card
- various Dell WLAN Utility, Connections, and Odyssey settings
- three HARD resets (yes i backed up my data first)
- uninstalled all software from device AND from computer it syncs with
- surfing while Axim is in cradle, through ActiveSync passthrough (this worked, by the way)
- power cycle the wifi router
- all kinds of great suggestions from aximsite forums
- the entire list of items at
http://wifi.aximsite.com/sync.html
I don't know which software blew up the wifi (I don't even know that software did blow it up, as wifi says it is connected, it sees my network.) I did read that some Today plugins cause wifi problems. But a Hard Reset should have taken care of this.
Dell tech support (ha) said it was a hardware problem and they are sending me a new Axim. I will make sure it has all the same specs as this one - I read elsewhere in this forum that Dell sent someone a replacement "low" instead of the "high" being replaced!
