Right now, my favorite multifunction pens for use with my Axim are the Yafa collection of pens. Although the PhD is suitable for some, I cannot right with such a thick pen. For me it's like holding a kindergarten crayon. I prefer a pen that is close to the size of a normal pen.
The Yafa pens include 3 different pens that can be bought at Office Depot. The stylus pens are the Quadro Deluxe, Quadro 4-Function, and the Quad-Point 4 function pen illustrated here:
http://www.yafa.com/Office_Depot.shtml. The Quad-Point is the least expensive of the pens with a price around $10. Very affordable considering the pen is made of metal instead of plastic and actually replaces four writing instruments. The Quadro’s are equally as nice, but you are paying for a designer pen. Personally, I found the carbon fiber deluxe to be the best match to the Axim. Of course, these designer type pens cost more money. The Quadro 4-Function retails for around $22 and the Quadro Deluxe is $30. The range of cost is reasonable and lets the person choose which pen best suits them.
The pens are all metal and balance nicely in the hand. I own one of each and I haven’t had one break on me yet. The barrels all have grips that make them easy to hold. This is especially important when the pen is being used for a long period of time. Pens that have a smooth barrel with no rubber can be hard to write with because your fingers will continuously slide down. To choose a function you simple press the end cap while that chosen function is facing toward you. To close the pen, you click a button that is located on the pocket clip. This is easy to use and I rarely get the wrong point. The only complaint I have about their build is I can hear there points rattle on the inside if I shake the pen. If only there was some way the 4 pen points could be totally silenced on the inside.
The pen is easy to personalize. The pens come with a yellow stylus, a black pen, an orange highlighter pen, and a .5 mm pencil. The yellow stylus is great. No mistake that you have the stylus out and no mistake the pen point for a stylus. I changed the orange highlighter pen out to a red pen in the car right after I purchased mine. My boyfriend just as easily put a blue pen in where the pencil had been. Now my aunt, who owns one also, did not want the yellow stylus. She actually changed hers out to a white stylus. In fact, Office Depot has the other ink colors in stock in their store and the refills are less then $1 each.
As far as the inks go, I haven’t had an issue. The ink is smooth and doesn’t blot or bubble out. The pencil works great and I enjoy the .5mm tip instead of the much larger .7mm. I can be much more exact. The orange highlighter that came with the pen worked, but did not seem very useful to me. It is a pen point, not a marker point like most highlighters. I changed this point out for red ink which is more functional for me.
Using this pen I can take notes for both my meetings at work and my classes at school. It’s amazing how big a difference using a pen instead of a stylus can make. It had been a great purchase and I thought the price point was just right. I can’t stand cheap plastic pens, but I also don’t want to overspend on something so easy to lose.
