Bluetooth stereo headphone performance

I just bought a very cheap set of BT phones (iTech C51-A04108-XX) but find they are fairly unusable due to drop-ups (packet losses??).

I am curious to know if the problem is a function of my X30 or whether it could be the phones and wondered if anyone else has experienced this behaviour too.

I have tried various things to improve performance but none make the slightest difference.

1. I switched off all Wifi devices in the house.
2. I switched off all wireless phones/base station in the house.
3. I tried both extending the distance between X30 and phones and reducing
the distance to zero.
4. I turned off all X30 programs except the music source and BT function.
5. I tried monitoring the CPU activity and battery current looking for any correlation with the drop-outs.
6. I tried operating the X30 + phones at the bottom of the garden.

What are your experiences?

Thanks,

Peter

Hey Peter, I do not know about the model you got, but I have the Nokia BH-604's. They work flawlessly with my Axim X51v (with WM 6.0) and my HP laptop with a Zoom PCMCIA BT card. I have not done extensive testing, but I watched a couple of episodes of Dr. Who with zero drop outs. I also played mp3's from the axim for testing. The Nokia headset has a very long run time also. Here is where I purchased them: Nokia BH-604 Bluetooth stereo headset at MobileCityOnline.com

You may want to test another model headset. Not knowing anything about X30s I can not comment on it. Maybe some else on here has that model and has tested stereo bluetooth headsets with it. Hope that helps a little :)

How did you get the A2DP (Stereo Bluetooth) profile onto the x30? Last I knew, the x30 was not capable of using that profile.

In my ignorance I just used the BT connection wizard for headset setup.
I didn't know i was missing some protocol but perhaps that's my problem.

Thanks,

Peter

I'm not sure about the A2DP profile on the X30,
(That's the BT profile that gives true stereo)
it may or may not have it.
If it doesn't you may still be getting reasonable sound through both ears but just not a proper split stereo.
One of the ways to fix the strange drop out is to make sure the Headset connects to the Device rather than the other way around. Nobody, as far as I am aware has explained why, but it often works.

Pair your Headset and Ax in the normal way.
Then turn BT off on both.

Turn on the headset first.
Turn on the BT on the Ax
Allow the Headset to find and connect to the Ax.
Accept the connection on the Ax.
Listen to your music.

Generally, by connecting in this order you will avoid the annoying crackle and signal drop.
If this doesn't fix it then it is a different problem.

Hi deefish,

Thanks for responding. My Axim is a generation behind your's which probably doesn't help me. From what I've read subsequently it looks like my problem doesn't lie in the headset.

Hi Box,

That's an interesting trick. I can get the X30 to lock to the headset but haven't been able to do the reverse so far but I'll try a bit harder.

I'm resigned to the lack of stereo given Xtremegene's thoughts but this is not too critical for me as much of my listening is 1930s jazz records :)

Since posting here I've been reading a bit more and decided to try reducing the data rate as per Menneisyys article You have skipping or other problems with your stereo Bluetooth headphones? Read this!
I get the quality reductions but unfortunately I still have drop-outs. :(

Thanks to all for your thoughts,

Peter

Buy a bluetooth transmitter. I've bought a 200 dollar headphone and it has a poor connect with my PDA. So I bought a transmitter and it works, as if I was directly connected to it. Some might also support A2DP

Thanks Zeromax, I hadn't considered that. Yet another thing to look after but it does give wireless. :)
